Which is the difference between AI and Original AI.
When I put a player controlled by the machine I can select Original AI or AI, which is the difference?

Original AI is from the original CD version of AoE2 (it is considered the easier one as it is easy to learn what it will do and it tends to do the same stratergies each time).

The AI is the new one developed for the HD edition, let's just say this one is not to be underestimated...

Thank you for posting this. I was wondering why this version was so much more difficult than my disc version. Now I can start to enjoy this again. I was becoming very fustrated by the massive advantage the AI seemed to gain.

Just wanted to say if anyone's trying to beat the newer AI and struggling its very susceptible to early rushes.
I can go very indepth between the differences, as i have worked with the HD ai for my own personal projects, but to not make it longer than it needs to be:

ES AI cheats on harder difficulties, by setting itself 500xper resource when using the market.

HD AI does not cheat with resources, but if you set it on hardest with the additional taunt command to enable it super hard difficulty, it cheats by the villagers dropping more resources than need to.

Other notable differences:
Pathfinding works on a different heuristic that prioritizes castle drops(encirclement or avoiding castles)

Economic management is coded from scratch, that it prioritizes wood and food than gold and stone, unlike ES Ai that just splits his villager count to be equal on each resource

Naval battles and raids/skirmishes are improved to not be kited or chase fishing ships for ever.

And some minor changes to countering units, as well to utilize the new civilizations.

Ironically, I don't believe the new HD AI actually cheats while the old AI cheats on Hard. The new AI simply plays more efficiently.

what Filthydelphia said...

Yeah the new AI never cheats by default but i think this is also what Prosecutor wanted to say (you'd have to chat the AI a specific command (number 200) on the hardest difficulty level to enable cheating) and it will chat if someone did that.

Everyone explained it pretty well, if you have any more questions about the AI(s) feel free to ask! :)

Also, the old AI is suspected to cause desyncs in late game, as far as i know

i am not even sure. the old ai is probably used to have less time to process and therefore it puts out less commands. now, in lategame, the performance improvements (which are certainly there, just not working as intended) may “improve“ the old ai beyond the point where the memory space allocated by command overflows.
it's something they messed up, but probably by accident.

so i go to diplomacy screen and send the ai a message "200" and it starts cheating?

If you enable cheating with the 200 command vs hardest, please tell us specifically how much it cheats!

Does anyone struggle against hardest ? I was dominating hardest by early archer rush, but I guess they optimized the AI more. Now it beats the ♥♥♥♥ out of me! Only way to win is tower rushes, but I wonder if there are any other tactics you guys using to beat that monster.

Cheers !
