Running out of stone/gold?
Hey guys, I've recently got into AOE2 but sometimes I run into a certain issue, there's no more gold or stone in the game. This has serious consequences on my buildings/army since I can't produce more units and siege weapons. Any tips?

In team games you can built up trade. Trade carts (Trade cogs) generate gold each time they get to an allied market (dock for cogs). Stone is a limited non-replenishable ressource. Once the last bit is of the map, you can only buy it in the market.

In Single Player gold is limited too. Only Portuguese can generate gold and stone with their unique building Feitoria which costs aside it's building cost also 20 pop.

Gold can also be generated if you have relics in your monastery

Mix your units with cheaper units that don't cost gold (such as spearmen). So, your gold doesn't run out so quickly. Of course, upgrade the units as much as possible, so that they are good in the late game.

Everybody has this "gold problem". In the end, if the game is really long, everybody will be forced to build units that cost no gold (not counting the options to trade through a market or on water, or the possibility to get gold from relics). If you have run out and there is no chance to get more gold, buy some gold on the market to build more siege weapons, because you need them. Then you're all set.

Keeping your gold units alive is also a good tip. Make smart use of your archers, monks and Siege onagers . I often have my monks and archers survive for the entire game. You can do this by letting your pikeman and skirmisher take the hit.(also called meatshield)

Is there a better way to create groups of soldiers? Like, I'd usually double click on a specific unit, then a certain ammount of them would get selected and I would form a line. But then, if I clicked on one of the same units that were left out, soldiers from the first group would also split..

I usually use the market to sell the stockpiled wood and food. It's a pretty good way to get some gold back which you can then use to buy stone. Keep that villager number high and work around what you have. With regards to the units, select a group of them and then press Ctrl+1. They will be assigned to the control group 1 and when you press "1" you will have them selected. Continue with other groups using Ctrl+2, Ctrl+3 and onwards. You will then have you army groups available on your number keys for easy maneuvering. :)

select group ctrl+ number, after that you can just press the number if you want to select the group.
