New Player Needing Guidance
Hi Guys

Looking to start playing casually as I am completely new to the game and I have a few questions

1) when you play daily, do you tend to play on the same server and do your "Items" (I assume that's what they are called) stay in an inventory when you move servers?

2) is there a form of smaller server where the map isn't huge that I could get used to?

If anyone has a YouTube channel they can recommend for newbies that would be awesome. my mate introduced me to DZ-SA launcher but just want to play vanilla and get used to things

TIA lads

welcome to dayz :)

1) u can only transfer your character on official servers, as they only have two hives, one for 1pp-only and one for all the 3pp servers.
the community servers all have their own hive. u can have in theory as much characters as there are servers.
so u can try a bunch of servers and can always come back to previous played ones and have still your char from back then (unless the server wiped, which might happen every couple of months on community servers and about 1, 2 times per year on official servers).

2) theres a ton of smaller maps, like esseker or namalsk, but that doesnt mean it would be easier in the beginning. specially namalsk has a very harsh environment and esseker is very pvp orientated.

i recommend to stick to vanilla (community) chernarus for now to get the basics of the game. u will learn new things by just playing the game.

You don't need the 3rd party DZSA Launcher, unless you are looking for some very obscure private server. The recent updates to DayZ have greatly improved the vanilla Game Launcher.

1.A. How other people play may not be how you want to play .. DayZ is very open-world, Play how you like.
1.B. Your "Inventory" stays on your Character, until you die. If you play on Official servers, you can "server Hop" to any other Official server with the same Map (Either ChernarusPlus, or Enoch,aka-Livonia) AND the same view perspective, 1st person or 3rd person.
1.C. You can have TWO Characters on Official servers, one for the 1st Person Hive, and one for the 3rd Person Hive.
1.D. You can NOT server-hop on Community servers, or from Official to Community. Each Community server, you have a different Character (it can be the same "customized" Character, but it won't be the same Instance of that Character).

2.A. There are only two "Official" maps, available on "Official" servers; ChernarusPlus ans the DLC map Enoch, aka-Livonia.
2.B. You can find "low-population" Official servers to learn the vanilla game on, or you can join a Community server, which can use any map available in the Game or in the Steam Workshop.
2.C. Smaller Community server maps are usually geared towards intense PvP and have a higher difficulty level (modified/reduced Loot Table, or Modded "threats"), when compared to the Vanilla Official servers.

You may find it better to learn on a low pop vanilla server, where you will have less interaction with other players and thus have space to learn how to survive and navigate the large maps.

Once you can survive you could then take those game skills onto high pop and learn how unforgiving other players can be.

Welcome to the game!
I would recommend you watch streamers play the game on Twitch. I did this for quite a while before I started playing and feel it gave me a huge advantage. You will learn by watching how things are done by experienced players. Where POIs are in relation to spawn points and many other helpful things.
The Lights Out 2 event is running for the next 2 days which is a huge 100 player streamer event. There are lots of good streamers playing that you could watch live on Twitch like SourSweet, RunningmanZ, AdamCrook, Summit1G and many others. People in chat are usually very helpful answering any questions you might have too.
