That's my concern. The way the trees work now, if you can see someone sitting under the boughs of a pine tree, and you aim at them, you can hit them. But with those solid,conical/cylindrical hit boxes, the tree will act like a solid object. Even if you're firing shots through the gaps in the branches. I don't know... Either I'm seriously misunderstanding things, or this is an extremely lazy way for them to start doing things.
They talked about it in the newest DayZ Developer Stream for update 1.24:
https://www.twitch.tv/videos/2030241821 00:36
And nowhere are the words "like a concrete wall" mentioned, they just simplified the hitbox.
BUUUUT if leafs can stop bullets currently, then yes this could be rough lol
It really doesn’t seem too much different; it actually seems the hit boxes are already pretty huge how it currently is. But if tree leaves and small branches are stopping bullets…..that’s pretty crappy, considering you can shoot through some doors and walls.
i hope you're right. That's my main concern.
Have you seen the new hit boxes? The current hit boxes are pretty intricately shaped. They follow the contours of the branches, etc. The new ones look like birthday party hats. It's literally a cone superimposed over the whole tree.
The leaves/tree have to be separate parts of the same class/object in order for the leaves to be passable, but for the tree itself to be solid. I really don't understand why it's so difficult for them to just make branches/leaves have no collision or interaction with anything in-game and keep them solely as an aesthetic piece. The whole point of the branches in standard gameplay is to obstruct vision which is why people will run into the trees not for protection, but for obstructing the enemy's view of you and making it harder for them to shoot you
They're making a mountain out of a mole hill with this whole tree issue. Their examples of vehicles getting stuck in tree branches wouldn't happen if the tree branches didn't have collision to get stuck on in the first place and I think everyone can agree that, if you drive your car into a tree, your vehicle deserves to be stuck. I mean, wasn't that the whole reason for them adding the feature of being able to push vehicles so that you could get them unstuck?
This is just another exhibit of them going from point A to point B via point C, D, E, F, and G instead of just going straight to point B. The solution couldn't be easier and yet they want to do this which will almost certainly still result in clipping problems because changing the shape of something doesn't change the way vehicles will interact with it
maximum glove gaming can report here (to warn other players), for everyone else i suggest making reports on their feeback tracker.
In real life bullets zip right through trees even the trunk
