Temporary solution is to go into Steam>Settings>Downloads and lower Max Pings / Min to the lowest possible value.
If it is a modem we are talking about, call your ISP, tell them the modem is faulty and ask for a replacement, preferably a different model. Test the new one, if it still doesn't work or they refuse, change your ISP immediately.
"the technician was baffled and had never heard of it happening before"
The issue you are describing is widely occuring and very known because MANY router/modem manufacturers erronously design their product so that if a rapid ping browse occurs, its IP-table overflows and crashes.

Benga I have not opened my ports, do you know which ones to open for DayZ? Thx
Vitdom, this issue is quite common and is known as an ARMA 2 bug also, it is not a problem on the users end. Thx
Now go and read my post and report back once you've tried Steam's server browser and also if it crashes your LAN. Make sure you set the Max Pings / Min setting to 5000 or maximum when you test this.
There is no setting for ping friend that I can see under [download], why would the modem be faulty if this game is the only one which does it? Also, I can join fine if done from PLAY on the main menu, no crashes and no lag.
PS How do I use the Steam server browser? Thx
I don't think I want to turn off wifi as I use my laptop alot, I'd rather not play until BiS fix the issue rather than not being able to speak to my friends etc
Press Server -> Select Filters -> Select Type and press <ALL>. a lot of servers should now be appearing, if not try emptying all filters.
If it suddenly stops, check if your modem crashed.
If you just press Play, you don't browse servers, and no rapid ping browsing occurs, hence no crash. It connects to the last played server IP.
I've just tried limiting the max ping in steam to 250ms and so far so good
