Server browser killing internet
Hi, basically when I try and join a server via the server browser, my internet in my household always dies, both my laptops, downstairs PC, gaming PC all lose connection and my network dies. Here is a picture of Windows diagnosis: http://i.cubeupload.com/Xb5wZ3.png

I know its alpha and I know the risks but just wondering if anybody knew of any possible fixes? This is the only time I've ever had anything remotely close to this happen, and I hear it was a issue in ARMA 2 as well?

However it works if I manage to connect to a server via browser, inevitably have my network die and then when reloading DayZ I click the 'play' option which sends you to the last server you were on and then it's fine, so it must be something to do with joining servers via the server browser.

Things I have tried:

-validating cache
-allowing DayZ via firewall (was already allowed)
-redownloading
-resetting modem
-calling internet provider, the technician was baffled and had never heard of it happening before
-joining different servers via browser, ones from different providers etc; they all kill my net still

Any ideas? Thx.

Try searching <All> servers in Steam>View>Servers. If it does the same, take your router and go back with it to the store, tell them it is broken and ask for a refund and a different model.

Temporary solution is to go into Steam>Settings>Downloads and lower Max Pings / Min to the lowest possible value.

If it is a modem we are talking about, call your ISP, tell them the modem is faulty and ask for a replacement, preferably a different model. Test the new one, if it still doesn't work or they refuse, change your ISP immediately.

"the technician was baffled and had never heard of it happening before"
The issue you are describing is widely occuring and very known because MANY router/modem manufacturers erronously design their product so that if a rapid ping browse occurs, its IP-table overflows and crashes.

Ah yes, forget to add internet, location etc.

UK
Virgin Media 120mbit
Virgin superhub

Benga I have not opened my ports, do you know which ones to open for DayZ? Thx

Vitdom, this issue is quite common and is known as an ARMA 2 bug also, it is not a problem on the users end. Thx

Yeh I could join games flawlessly for the first week or so of release, then maybe 2-3 days it did this, then went back to being great and for a week or so now it's been giving problems. Thx for the help. :)

Yes, the issues are as I described VERY common and all routers/modems that are faulty will have crashes if they are exposed to high rapid ping browsing. It is a problem on the user's end, esp. if the whole LAN dies.

Now go and read my post and report back once you've tried Steam's server browser and also if it crashes your LAN. Make sure you set the Max Pings / Min setting to 5000 or maximum when you test this.

There is no setting for ping friend that I can see under [download], why would the modem be faulty if this game is the only one which does it? Also, I can join fine if done from PLAY on the main menu, no crashes and no lag.

PS How do I use the Steam server browser? Thx

I don't think I want to turn off wifi as I use my laptop alot, I'd rather not play until BiS fix the issue rather than not being able to speak to my friends etc

Sorry, they moved it under In-Game instead of Downloads.

Press Server -> Select Filters -> Select Type and press <ALL>. a lot of servers should now be appearing, if not try emptying all filters.

If it suddenly stops, check if your modem crashed.

If you just press Play, you don't browse servers, and no rapid ping browsing occurs, hence no crash. It connects to the last played server IP.

Since changing pings to 250, I've gone into the game and hopped across 3 different servers without so much as a hiccup. Thank you Vitdom I owe you one! :)
if u just find like 60 or 200 server everytime jus deinstall the QoS Paketservice in your lan settings... this helps me to find more but i still have the problem that's block the internet after the refresh.

I also have this issue, Virgin Superhub 1. Internet dies for at least 5 minutes after you exit the game.

I've just tried limiting the max ping in steam to 250ms and so far so good
