It means you're suffering desync, when this happens you might experience quite a bit of lag but it will usually clear up shortly. The real thing to worry about is the "No message recieved for X seconds" disconnect message.

But what is the difference if it's yellow or red and broken and unbroken?

yellow is minor, red is worse, not sure about broken and unbroken

When no message recv for x seconds message comes up it boots me out of the game after 30 to 60 seconds.

Fear the yellow unbroken chain. 9 times outta 10, you get that...you're getting disconnected.

Funny, I've gotten that a few times, never disconnected though. Only times I disconnect/get disconnected is the "no message received" thing, which usually indicates that the server's restarting.

I've found that the red chain broken and whole don't really do anything to my connection, I never rubber band, never get the "no message received for x seconds" messages, like CoolHandLuke said, it's that yellow chain that gets me, if it's whole I'm screwed at whatever I was doing.
