The sun sits low on the horizon. So while it may rise in the east and set in the west, it'll still be to the south.

Its fairly simple to use one of the web maps and figure out what direction north is, also depending if you supersprint directly from point A to B or if you stop to gather stuff on the way it takes about 30 minutes to run from the south to the north of the map, around 2-3 hours if you stop for gear/food/water

I usually use the sun as my S direction (as told to me by a DayZ veteran friend) and I navigate fairly well.

In this game, the sun is most of the time to the south. so put the sun to your back and you will be headed north.
