You'd have to rent your server from one of the few GPSs currently available.

The prices range from $1.50 - $1.70 per slot per month as far as I can tell, with the minimum amount of slots being 30.

There are also some guidelines you have to follow in order to keep your server, which includes not locking your server and not kicking/banning people from your server.

How can I run my own server? (link)[forums.dayzgame.com]

We want to allow private hosting, which includes passworded servers, but we are finalizing changes to our database that will allow us to run a little data instance just for that server. This gives the best of both having a database and having a private community, without those private communities affecting the main database.

You can't ban people for killing you or they ban your server and keep your money, so have fun with that.

They can blacklist the server from the official hive. Without access to the server files (which aren't given to renters), you cannot do anything about it, and your server will be unfunctional.

You are renting a server that is connected to the official hive, which means that you're bound by the policies in effect for all public servers. You do not own the server, you're loaning it.

To put it into perspective; if you rent a DVD, you can't rewrite its contents and return it after the agreed period of time, nor can you snap it in half without consequences.

Once private servers become available, you can do literally anything you want with your server. Kick, ban, and abuse your players all you want, they don't have to put up with you, but they do if you can gear up on your own "public" server with no risk and bring the fight to those who wish no part of it.

If I had a nickel for every time I've seen complain about a server they rented being theirs...

Not sure having your own group all alone in a server without trolls is a way to enjoy the game like it was supposed to.

And this is what killed the official hives in the first place. And didn't the scriptkiddies know that they couldn't be banned by the guy forking out his own money for the server.

The official hives were a joke and still are.

You were allowed to ban people from official servers in the mod. Especially with proof, which was easy to get from server logs.

The actual reason why the official servers died in the mod was the amount of hackers, due to how easy it was to do some really absurd things in ARMA 2. And of course the fact that people created some very popular variations of the DayZ mod, which could never have been played on the official hive.

And this thread didn't have a troll until you popped in with your irrelevant, unhelpful comment. Why do people like you even take the time to reply if you have nothing to say. Are troll's brains wired to just post contrary replies in every thread they can find?

Why didn't you just let the thread sink to the bottom dude? Hasn't had a post since new year's eve and not it's back up on the front page.
