Well, on "Unofficial" servers, you will get names like "No PVP", "We have Helicopters", "Join = Kick" etc.
The official servers will likely be named "Day Z SA 101", "Day Z SA 102", "Day Z SA 103", for example.
Who pays for the official servers?
My understanding is official servers are public servers. No matter what the naming convention used, all public servers are "official" servers. Those that use the generic naming convention given to them by the hosting company are those where the person renting them has not changed the name to something more personalized.
When I look at Vilayer for instance I see this:
We offer 3 Official packages to pick from;
Official – This is a standard DayZ Server and is the same as how DayZ Standalone servers have been until this point. Official servers are bound by the official hosting rules.
Master Shard – This is your own fully private instance. This is roughly equivalent to a private hive DayZ Mod server. All data on your shard is only for your server and not shared with any others.
Slave Shard – A slave shard can connect to your Master shard. This allows you to connect several Slave Shards to your Master shard. All of the servers in your "cluster" will share data. You must own a Master Shard before purchasing a Slave Shard
As far a I know, the way the name is designated has nothing to do with whether it is official or not.
I have been on servers that have the standard naming convention and the admins have been abusive.
As far as I have ever been able to tell, there is no such thing as an official server designated solely by how the name looks.
So I'm very confused by all this talk about official servers with name differentiation.
All public servers are bound by the rules regardless of what their names say.
As far as I know BI does not provide any servers. They are all rented by individuals/groups.
I have no idea, other than to say that B.I might have a hand in it.
Truth be told though, and I know this might sound ignorant, but it's not my problem as long as it doesn't undermine game play. I mean, I don't want to sound entitled or anything, but I feel that we all paid, in some way, for the server rental when we bought a copy of the game.
I added to my post above. I think people are confused as to what "official server" means. Take a look at how Vilayer breaks it down.
As far as i know, BI has no hand in owning or renting any servers on the stable side.
I disagree about we all have paid though. Obviously, someone else, a private party, is paying for the server rental we are on if it's not us.
Well, I don't know the in's and out's of B.I's financial structure, that's not for me to concern myself with, not unless I were an employee of B.I, which I am not, but I find it hard to believe that a random bunch of Joe Bobs and Billy Bobs are all going to band together to buy official server access for the masses, on an official capacity, for the benefit of all, at financial risk to themselves, with nothing to show for it in return financially speaking.
I mean, I only know the basics of accountancy, and the reasonable sources of finance available to B.I, and we are the most likely source of finance for the project. Take that into consideration, and also take into consideration that B.I NEED a basic list of official servers, and they have got to have had a hand in it somewhere, otherwise, the project would collapse before it even got started without the required facilities for the player base to game on.
Cadderly . . "official" only means public servers as opposed to private servers (Master and slave). That's it. Nothing more. At least that I can find.
From day 1, the only thing I have ever seen is that BI does not provide servers. They are all rented by private parties.
Therejesus explains it all as she always did god bless her soul ..kinda of miss u :)
