The SKS, especially the fully milled versions, were much more expensive to make than the AKM. So military and police simply switched to the cheaper weapon when they wanted high capacity and got select fire in the bargain.
The SKS can actually be loaded very quickly with stripper clips in real life. It is one of the best guns around for survival because you are forced to conserve ammo but still has 10 shots as fast as you can pull the trigger. In Dayz righ6t now, I end up with it because it is easy to find and requires no searching for a magazine.
Oh and you could buy a SKS for less than $100 just a decade or two ago in the US. The Russian's were sometimes really nicely finished and in perfect shape. My first one cost me $89 and was brand new shape made in the 1950s
