What you need to do is find a couple of servers that you know to be working correctly.
Then stick them in favorites and just stay on those.
If you do load in as a freshspawn you need to log of immediately though and there is a chance you don't reset.
Next, you must realize that your character information is stored on the Hive and not all servers connect othe Hive, hence for those servers, you'd always be a fresh spawn.
Third, sometimes the server might temporarily lose its connection to the Hive. If this happens while you're logging in, you will log in as a fresh spawn. In this case, just exit ASAP, and try again or go to a different server.
Finally, you can still be killed by zombies or other players while you're logging out. For about 30 seconds after you cannot see the game world anymore, your character is still there, sitting, crouching, and laying down before they pop out. If you log out in a place with zombie aggro, surely you will be killed while you're logging out. Or...Players shoot you while you're logging out.
Try to log out either in the wilderness, hidden, and make sure you don't have any zombies following before you do, or log out inside buildings with the doors closed. I myself usually log out in storage sheds with the shelves.
I have another question. Do the servers restart and crash constantly? I dont think I have had one lucky play through this enttttiirree evening. Servers crashing/restarting/ other issues.
Is that normal to DayZ?
Totally depends on the server. Some may crash more often, most restart every 3-4ish hours. I stick to medium pop official servers (like SJ 1-17 or IL 1-6 or w/e) and don't see a lot of crashing if any.
I was about to write the same thing . Avoid servers with made up names . ( EX : Noobs annonymous or Killer Clowns of Chemarus )
It's worked so far every time.
Also, if you log onto a server to find your a fresh spawn then instantly log off. Don't even move your toon, just log off then log on to a DIFFERENT server that has at least 1-2 people on it. It should bring back your character unless your character died.
Yes, DO NOT JOIN A SERVER THAT LOOKS LIKE THIS:
"DayZ 24hr day, fast spawn FAST LOOT, no hax, no pvp, tons of ammo: hosted by Jabronies4life.org"
I've underlined the key here, but this is a solid tactic.
This is pretty much what I do.
If I'm near a hotspot like NWAF then I try to find an out of the way spot with plenty of cover for when logging in next time. If I'm in a random town deep inland then I will log out in a low loot building or shed. Either way, I sit and wait a while making sure a random zed wasn't following me or somehow spotted me from a ridiculous distance. Then I'll log.
I never log out in high quality loot areas and I never hop servers. I stick to one server for a play session and stick to official servers that I know won't get reset by some random admin while I'm in the middle of the NWAF.
I also take a short break between resets and never immediately try to reconnect after a server reset.
I do all of this and I have not been randomly sent to the coast in months.
