I'd like to be able to break one and cause a mercury contamination. Make it an option on the thermo itself, "Shatter on ground".

After you do this, if you do not have a gas mask or respirator on you will receive mercury poisoning that shows as Sick in your inventory. The effect will last until a reset and will poison the entire building in which you have broken the thermo (note this will not work in open areas).

When someone enters the building without respirator or gas mask, they will receive a message stating, "I'm having trouble breathing" and as it gets worse, "I'm coughing" followed by the red message, "I cannot breathe!" and at that point the player will have 2 minutes to cure themselves or they will become unconscious and die within 5 minutes after that. From entering the contaminated building until receiving the cannot breathe message, the player will have 5 minutes if they remain in the building. Note that after the first message is received, the player may suspend the progress of the poisoning by putting on a gas mask or respirator and the posioning progress will act as if they have left the building.

If the player leaves after the first message (or dons appropriate safety gear), they will still see the Sick status, but will not receive the coughing/cannot breathe messages for 30 minutes if left untreated. This time will be reduced by 10% for every kilometer they run after becoming sick.

To treat the poisoning, a player must drink water until they vomit and then use a Saline bag IV. After that they must not run for 15 minutes or the sickness will come back.

Mercury inhalation can kill you. Requiring the use of bronchodilators or, in extreme cases, intubation. It's more common to become violently ill by ingesting mercury, of course, and inhalation of it that causes a fatality is not as common, but you wouldn't be able to feed someone mercury without exposing yourself also, so my idea is just to incorporate inhalation poisoning. It's not as huge of a stretch as other existing mechanics are from the real life truth, so why not?
