depends on condition, I have clean cut 3-4 inch wood with a sharp machete but a blunt one wont even do half a inch. so considering 3-4 to be a arm bone and flesh inflicted by prist..condition machete. A hit to the neck 1 hit think big vain!

I know this shouldn't bother me this much...but "prist"...
lol you really were in such a hurry that you couldn't add those extra 3 letters?

i got this kick ass knife about half the size of machete and one good hit chop down a tree 3 inches thick couldnt imagine what it do to a human skull or arm its even got built in brass knuckles i want that puppy in dayz :)
I dont disagree that melee weapons are unbalanced...they are.

So we'll have to wait and see what they do when they finish the melee system and then start balancing the weapons individually.

However, if you want to talk about realism...a machete would be a terrible weapon vs zombies.

They arent made, nor designed for combat, and you'd constantly have issues with the blade being stuck in your target which would get you killed or disarmed, fast.

There is a reason bladed weapons meant for combat arent thin flat blades.

The things are meant to cut through wood. Why would flesh be a challenge?

I never said it'd be a challenge to cut through, but you arent cutting a zombie in half with one...

Therefore you are going to bite your blade into one, and because of the nature of the blade it has a high chance of sticking in your target's body...and being difficult to pull out.

Humans? Quick, light slashes, fine.

But a Zombie? You are going to have to do some serious hacking, or burry your blade in it's skull...which means a high chance of loosing your blade until you can wrench it out.

Which any zombie without a machete stuck in its head will be chewing on you while you get your sword in the stone on....

Real life
Head hit = kill
DayZ
head hit = faint for a few seconds
It depends heavily on the weight of the machete, the strength of the person swinging it, what the person is wearing, where you hit them.

If the person is wearing several layers of clothing it is going to absorb some of the blow.

If the blade it's self is dull then it's going to greatly greatly hinder the cutting ability, possibly causing layers of clothing to stop it entirely.

The way a machete work is it's designed to use the weight of the machete it's self to do the chopping, if the machete is sharp you don't have to swing hard to easily clear thick branches, you can swing steadly and go through them with easy. The machete in game is really a very small blade, designed for smaller branches and brush. It would do a reasonable amount of damage but it would take several swings to be truly lethal.

Even a blow to the head isn't 100% lethal, it would very likely glance off the skull and go to one side leaving the person ample time to defend himself or run away. Dull machetes will glance off branches the same way, that's why they must be sharpened often.

Realisticly the best weapons in the game would be the baseball bat or the crowbar. Anything blades would get stuck if it did break the skin.

Imagine swinging the fireaxe and cleaving into the torso of zombie, goodluck removing that axe fast enough to swing it again, even then, unless you're some sort of body builder you're not going to swing the axe over and over for very long.

Take it from someone that used to chop wood, I did it every day and it's extremely tiring.

Blunt weapons are your best bet, easily knock someone to the ground and finish them off, a good strike to the forearm or calf is going to make them drop a weapon or go to a knee. It's not going to get stuck, and it's not terrible heavy.

It's also surprisingly hard to cut through bone, even more so the neck to remove the head.

Look at the swords created to cleave heads from necks, they are very VERY heavy, have wide blades and are swing over the head and brought down with great force to quickly and cleanly remove the head.

The bladed weapons in dayz would not be able to remove heads or even lop off limbs with any amount of ease.

The best to do so would be the fireaxe, and you have have to swing with such force to get through the bone that you'd unlikely be able to swing it again.
