Half the time I don't play just because I have no clue where I am so i have no way to set a personal mission to go here or there and do this. Wandering around in the woods is eventless.
Gamers today want everything 'handed' to them, use your MK1 Computer (your brain).
Before you start out always find out where you are, then with compass figure direction you want to travel and how far. Stop every now and then and do a terrain association check. Keep track on a simple piece of paper where you are. The you can use the following to keep track on where you are.
With a simple compass and map all you need to do is take a azimuth (look at a prominant feature and check compass for degrees or direction) to a known prominant terrain feature. Take another azimuth to a different terrain feature. Take the two degree azimuths and then calculate the 'back' azimuth (the opposite degree reading to the objects, the 180* from direction you are looking, for example If I see the town at a W or 270* azimuth, the back azimuth is E or 90*), on you map (print out a copy) draw from each terrain feature seen the back azimuth lines, where they cross is where you are.
I have no problem figuring out where I am when needed.
Also a good tool for the game is a printed out map of area you are working in, a document protector over it, andss a grease pencil. Keep track of where you are by marking map with pencil, direction you want to move and where you want to go. Orientate map to proper direction, do a compass reading off map on where you want to go, the 'aim' your compass on that reading and walk towards a prominant object along that azimuth, get to that object and repeat aim compass at that object and walk towards it. Repeat till you get to where you want to be then update you map with your location.
Edit: And a decent compass REALLY REALLY helps
So using an ingame GPS (dot on the map) is the solution? Wouldn't the satellites have fallen out of orbit if they are not constantly corrected, mantained.
Learn the map from experience or trial and error, get used to certain landmarks if you choose to not use the external maps.
Wise words, I'm still finding myself heading in the wrong direction every once in a while. ;)
Pristine compass and map (printed or on screen) are now your best friends and need.
My one and only gripe is we can't combine the map sections as of yet (then again I haven't tried in a long while or picked up a map). Would be nice if we could just make them even more rare.
too true ,once you know the map finding out were u at isint alll that difficult ,and if you really get lost use the sun and compasses to find ur way to the coast ....
We should not have to be printing stuff out or using out of game resources to be able to play.
Does the compass work now?
