Bluntly, you're looking for food in the city.
- Think of packaged food in buildings and cars as a "bonus" snack (they are small and low calorie anyway).

You will probably find more packaged food on the Infected that you kill, than you will by looting .. don't confuse this to mean there is less packaged food in the buildings, it's just harder to find because of a few factors I won't get in to here.

As was already said, the "most food" will come from fishing .. it's easy, and can be started with nothing but a stone knife (combine 2 small stones, or one small stone and rub it on a boulder in the environment to craft).
- gather a few small stones to make several stone knives.
- cut up old clothes to make 12 rags.
- combine 6+6 rags to make rope.
- use stone knife to cut down a bush for long sticks - gather 3 long sticks
- break (1) long stick to make (3) short sticks, then use short sticks and knife to craft wooden fish hooks
- use one long stick + rope to make a fishing rod, add hook and bait*
* use stone knife to dig worms by looking straight down at grassy ground
- use stone knife on last long stick to sharpen it - this makes a cooking stick.
-- Fishing rod and cooking stick will fit on your character's Shoulder slots, no need for extra bag to carry them, and they can be broken back down if needed.

Find or make rope, get a knife, get some sticks, make a fishing rod and wooden hooks, dig for worms, attach worm to hook and go fishing! I always do this to start. It might be a little bit of a slow start, but it ensures you’ll have enough food to travel for quite a while (get a big-ish backpack) if you can hold 4-6 cooked pieces of fish on you. This way you really won’t need to worry much about water.

You have a few alternatives:

- Get a knife, a gun and head northwest (inland) so you can find and hunt some animals. Listen to their calls.

- Fish with a fishing rod (either a regular one, or craft with long stick + rope + hook made of bones)

- There's usually enough food in the towns but you need to loot effectively

- Find fruit, mushrooms. You can find fruit under certain trees, and mushroom can grow anywhere in the woods basically. They spawn as you stay within the same area, so if you're in the area for a good 10 minutes there will spawn a few fruits/mushroom nearby.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

So, people in real life really do think processed food in stores just magically appears there?

Ironically it does just magically appear in dayz... perhaps though not in quantities some would seem to prefer...

-do less sprint
-cheak clothes on the floor for sometimes its spawn inside them.
-kill the zombies for they have food with big chance
-do fishing or hunt the chickens

Okay I didn't read what others wrote here.
Very very simple, go to a forest, lay down there 10-5 minutes, look for shrooms, they spawn near tree branches, or broken wood logs, you'll have plenty of shrooms there,

It literally is, there is water EVERYWHERE .. :steamfacepalm:
- Chernarus has a Coastline on TWO sides of the map, and dozens of ponds, rivers and lakes.
- Livonia has a huge river running across the entire map, plus other ponds.
- Sakhal is LITERALLY an Island, surrounded by water that is not frozen.

Too cute by half. :steammocking:

first of all this is a game not a real life simulator, and back in my day playing dayz food you loot in buildings was enough to keep you going.

Food --> wildlife
getting any wildlife. Chicken, goat, cow, fish, deer etc gives so much food its problem solved.
Especially when you make a clean headshot --> pristine pelt equals maximum amount slabs of meat and high % on them.

find a nice house on the wayside with a large stove or even two stoves and quickly roast and cook it all. Stow it in you backpack cause you can overheat and burn when stowing it in pants & jacket.

Hold a log in hands and stow it in the over to open the cooking prompts.
Add bark for kindle and with bark + short stick - scroll wheel craft a firestarter handkit thingy to light the fire. add enough logs to make sure you can cook it all.

When you play with friends one could do the cooking while the other lie prone on overwatch locations to make sure no one can surprise you when you exit the house after cooking.
The smoke from the chimney can be seen from quite a distance if the weather is clear.

For water: Find a gasoline can in agarage, empty it and fill it water. You only need 1 waterboy for a squad of 3 this way instead of searching for multiple bottles and flasks or going from waterwell to waterwell.

Then thats a you issue for not putting in the effort to learn. that being said natural food sources and stuff like alcahol tincture is unecasserly rare at the same time (im looking at you steak knife)

you could benifit the use of a resource map allowing you to loot efficently and get the guns needed to hunt your food (cow easily best meat if you have the spare space to carry it)
