Fishing is probably the best thing to learn, second would be hunting farm animals (Pigs, Cows/Bulls, Sheep and Goats)
- You can trap rabbits, but like chickens, they don't provide a lot of meat.
Get a long stick, a rope, and a short stick and you can craft a fishing rod and a wooden hook .. scour the shore line for regular hooks or Jigs (no bait needed).
With a good knife, (or a bunch of small stones to keep making Stone knives), and all those old useless clothes you keep finding, you will never go hungry.
I can go on an official server blindfolded and be end game geared and 100% well fed in 20 minutes...
Its ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ pointless
I spent hours running around, i shot one dudez looted, spent rest of tine searching for water, didnt find
Found another player, fought him, and je used cheats to kill me, blew me up a mile away or wtf
FIshing is extremely reliable, safe and easy. And accessible almost everywhere at any time. And you do not need specific items to do it.
- Find Chlorine tablets, and you can fill containers from the same ponds and streams, and then purify it to make it safe.
-- For Sakhal, you need to find Chelating tablets to purify water (scooped snow) of Heavy Metals .. ans snow is everywhere.

there is plenty. its the main intended way for people to stay hydrated early game and basically being the only source of water unless zombies give you some cans (which is really good tbh)
outland is where surviving is supposed to be easy and heading inland is where it gets more difficult
i am still fairly dependent on a resource map however especially near spawn i just know where the spots are but thats the main issue you need to know where to look to get what you need
Zombies are an underrated source of loot in general. Especially hunter and military zombies. Just make sure you lure them to choke points where you can easily take them one on one instead of dealing with an entire horde in the open.
Every single coastal town has at least one pump within a 20 second sprint to the ocean.
