DayZ
Returning Player. Tips welcome!
I have not really played this since Early Access. It feels the same, but also different in many ways. Such as finding guns seems to be much easier now, but food is even more scarce. I will generally have combat gear before I have one extra can of food.
So, I'm just looking for any tips for a returning player or things I should know about full launch Dayz.

welcome back :)

dont rely on canned food. see it as a bonus.

find or craft a knife and your food problems are gone. u can craft knives with small stones (find them at dirtpaths or railway tracks or craft one at big rocks with its useable tools). u can also craft knives and hooks from bones. use them for fishing, cutting up stuff and making fires. if u find a metal wire u can craft a simple trap. place it somewhere, add bait (bones, worms or fruits) and check back 5 minutes later. it will have a fox, hare or chicken.

u loose more energy while sprinting or being cold. so try to limit that as freshspawn.

after you loot a town, walk back to the start and check for fruit/mushrooms.
they spawn 5-15 minutes within a certain range

so if you are ever drying off wet clothes, after done check trees.
if you afk in the woods for 5-10 mins just leave your dude there and look for mushrooms, specifically by dead trees but they POP out its hard to miss lol

killing zombies is the same, they also respawn.. just shout into your open mic to pull aggro jump on a car and punch away
Obvious stuff out of the way. Do not stay near the coastal spawn for too long. Most coastal loot is mediocre and you will be contested by desperate fresh spawns and kitted players looking for easy kills. Get an article of two of clothing, get a bite or two of food. Maybe a drink at the water well, then GTFO the coast and head inland to greener pastures where the loot is plentiful and the player density is lower.

Have a goal in mind for every new character. This will keep the game interesting during times when the game might seem a little less exciting. Make a base, fix a car, take over a town. These are just a few examples of goals you can make for yourself.

One more tip. Learn to read a topographical map. Learning how to do this will allow you to navigate in DayZ in a more safe manner. Learning to navigate the wilderness will keep you safer than walking alongside roads or following powerlines.

Best of luck

In recent updates, character Temperature and Health have become a MUCH bigger focus .. It is important to find clothing appropriate for your choice of Map .. too cold, and you will get sick, too hot, and you will dehydrate faster.
- On Sakhal, heat buffs are pretty much mandatory .. even before food, you need to find a way to start a fire or craft and light a torch for additional heat, or you will get sick, and progress to terminal Pneumonia. (similar for Chernarus at night, it gets cold)

Buy Sakhal. It's small enough to navigate and find friends making the game a lot kore enjoyable and adds more survival gameplay. I started on Sakhal and after 300 hours I'm finally giving the big maps a chance.

Hunting and fishing are the best food sources, Trapping, foraging, scavenging tinned food is only good at spawn. You hunt by following the sounds of animals and shooting them (farm animals can be meleed). Fishing can be done by finding/crafting a rod, finding/crafting a hook (bone or wood), and digging bait. Put it together and you can fish in water sources.

Stay warm and dont sprint to conserve how much food you use. Yellow temps will dehydrate you quickly. Dark blue temps will consume food fast and take health so look for better clothing and keep is in good condition so as to be well insulated.

Keeping your stats as high as possible is the key to preventing sickness. Prevention is better than a cure but just in case learn the symptoms of each disease and how to cure it. Be aware you can have multiple diseases at the same time. So be careful when you diagnose your sickness.

Good luck Survivor. Don't forget to wash your hands.
