Cheating to get inside base?
Me and some friends built a base in a barn in southern Taranay on the Sakhal map. Had a solid setup as well, some cars and a few tents + barrels. Then we took a break from playing one day, and just half an hour later someone had broken into our base and taken most of our loot. They couldn't take the cars as they had only deconstructed the walls but the frames were still there. They didn't use explosives to get in, we think they somehow got into the barn and used our tools to deconstruct their way out, as our tools were scattered around either ruined or badly damaged.

Is this a common problem on DayZ and is there a way to prevent it?

Standard locks can be picked fairly quickly
and/or it is not hard to shoot a wall down if you have the ammo or
just hack it down with an axe and several sharpening stones.
It is absurd how easy it is to raid a base in vanilla DayZ.
Why is cheating always the first choice?

Yap welcome in DayZ, i writed down my story under another post.
Cherno 1.25 , i hade a base inside deep in the forrest. A guy comed ther he calld me on my steam name and after that shoted me throug the wall, i didnt die so started get up and i only sawd the half of guy inside the wall and the other side of him already in my base and shoted me down again. (Through a sheetmetal wall wahts have barbed wire bottom and top to).

Everyone thinks their Base is secure .. 95% of them never think like a Raider when building.
- It is very easy to vault over the walls to get in, or there may have been someone already logged off in that Barn before you ever built your base. The second scenario is most likely, and why building inside any structure is not as good an idea as you think it is .. If YOU think it's a good base location, then someone else also thinks it's a good place to log out for the night, or until next weekend, when they have time to play.
Some barns have holes up on the walls near the ceiling that can be crawled through. It requires boosting though.

It's also possibly someone logged out inside the building before you built the base. Sakhal is a small map, so I would bet on this option.

I have never found a base i could not get into and raid on an official server.
They are a long way from being secure.
No hacks needed, just a little time an axe and some stones..
I also have a mate who is quick at picking locks.

Compared to practically every other game with base building out there, DayZ bases are so insanely weak by comparison that it is much more believable that it can be a cheater than in other games like Rust/ARK

Regardless, I have done a LOT of messing around with bases with my friends and you'd be surprised by the amount of ways you can get over a wall without having to break it down. For example, my 2 friends and I successfully did a 2-man head stack to climb on top of the roof of someone's base to get past their walls and into the few tents that we had access to. There was also an occasion where a player had done a poor placement of a wall near a tree and we were somehow able to vault up & over the tree branch to get inside of their base. Depending on the apartment setup, you can even use head stacking to get onto the balconies of apartment buildings even with the game not letting you vault over balcony railings

When basing your assumptions solely off of basic game knowledge and experiences with other games, it's not a surprise for cheating to be something that newer players (or at least newer to base building) would jump to. However, once you get into it a bit and learn about damaging walls & ways to get over them safely, you start to realize that it's just how the game is and nothing can change it

on vanilla servers, building a base to secure loot isn’t worth the effort.
between cheaters, active exploits and established raiding strategies, no base is safe.
and who needs cheats if you easily can build something like that:

Garden plots stacked on top of each other, one could do the same thing with fireplaces. It should be fixed now. But as usual, when one bug/exploit door gets closed, another one opens.

Official server? Hackers can manipulate stashes and objects from a distance.

lets hope its fixed. the fireplaces despawn faster but the garden spots stayed for ages and there was floating loot or bases when they despawned. such ugliness

I actually hate the premise of nerfing one's ability to climb and manipulate world items.

We don't really get ANY environment interaction in this game. Ever since you could move crates around to reach higher places in Half-Life - this has become a staple of gaming.

So we have to nerf the game for adventure players and non-base builders because a few whiners lost their stash?

Part of me wishes rhe developers would treat this game's audience for what it is - two separate audience's whos preferences completelt clash with one another.

DayZ should have forked their development. It's one of the most played games on Steam. I won't speak to their intentions or speculate, but it plainly has rhe appearance Bohemia Interactive bought the DayZ mod just to profit off of while doing as little work as possible.
