Had the same excact issue on a soft modded Chernarus server.
It happened while I closed the door of my base, while the car whise nearly in the middle so the door went through the car... bad mistake, the car started floating in the middle of the ground like a ghost car.
We managed to fix it with a fireplace on the floor, so the car would touch it and flip to the ground again, but it happened another time and then it just went down...
Next time, never opening or closing doors of a built base, next to a vehicle...
This game... xD
- You're lucky they "fixed" the cars a long while back, or it would have sent your car to the Moon when the gate hit it.
No I did not, I said that one specific incident, was User Error ..
In all my hours, the only time I have EVER had a vehicle "sink" is when crashing a mod-added vehicle, in a very spectacular showing of acrobatic prowess, or by driving outside the boundary of the map.
In my recent case I watched my Ada, parked away from anything else on a seaside dock in Rudnogorsk, start sinking into the dock right after I exited the vehicle. It was like quicksand with a little side slippage. I approached the Ada but could not get the "Get In" prompt. Before it was totally submerged I logged out of the otherwise empty server then almost immediately logged back in. The Ada was now firmly sitting where I parked it.
The second event was a couple of irl days later up in the Zvezdny nikel mining area on snow covered ground with an Olga. I parked and went up the side of a hill to a single little workshop, looted, then turned around to see the Olga was gone. After metaphorically soiling myself I realized the quicksand syndrome may be repeating so I logged off & on to be greeted by my fully loaded Olga pretending that nothing had happened.
I have checked the Steam bug reports thread for DayZ and somebody else mentioned a singular similar event this month on March 5 but not a whole lot of detail was given. I'm heading to the official DayZ website to see what may turn up.

It's a dayz bug, in other words.
I wonder if anyone has been in the vehicle when it sinks. I'm doubtful since it appears that vehicles go through some cyber-transformation once they are empty of players.
For us on my server, it seemed to happen most when people would get out too quickly and the car was still moving very slowly; but not moving enough to hurt you.
It hasn't happened on my Banov map server for a while. The first few days it happened 4 or 5 times, and not once since.
