Peak DayZ
What experience for you would you describe as "Peak DayZ"?

I'm playing Sakhal on a community server and have been alive for days (in real life). I've been "living" in a certain spot that I've turned into a sniper's nest. From that spot, I can see and snipe at players 1000m away (in all directions), and includes a great view of the 'land bridge'. My spot is difficult to get to, so I'm able to leave my game AFK and then peak back in on it to snipe people. Not far from my spot, I found a fire barrel, which I've brought back to my spot and concealed within terrain (you can put those things anywhere). The fire barrel contains food, traps (bear traps, land mines), and the best gear from my fallen enemies.

Last night I squad wiped 5 people and they didn't even get within 200m of me. I wish they did, because then it turns into the last act of "Home Alone", where I sit back and watch as they run into my numerous booby traps. The other day, someone got close, but were greeted with a PO-X gas trap and was forced to flee to their death.

For me, this is peak DayZ because it shows that preparation, patience, and creativity can lead to incredibly fun scenarios that no other game comes close to.

(Had to re-organize the first post because people weren't reading the full thread and thought this was just a thread about my bragging about kills or something. Before getting triggered, please read the thread).

Peak dayz?... To not kill people just for the hell of it, to not take their time easily, to not create entertainment from their misery. That is peak dayz for me; surviving without being a sociopath. I have like 8k hours and killed no more than 50 people overall. I always regret and always pay for bad decisions, always. One of the reasons im not playing much any longer is that character of mine; too soft and naive. But thats my peak.

The thing that makes dayz great is for everyone peak dayz means something different. If everyone did the same thing it would be boring as hell. Dayz needs players of all flavours.

The fact that some people camp spots for hours (ratting) instead of just playing the game is one of those things that discourage me from playing.
They just wait for footsteps while watching Youtube video and clicking Runescape trees. It's why it's impossible to go to Zelenogorsk without getting ♥♥♥♥ on by some dude camping somewhere. There is always a guy waiting for you and it makes that spot a massive turn off.
It also reminds me that I miss the recoil in Rust because the combat meta favored straf beaming over that kind of play style.
I play this out of disdain for Facepunch, mostly, as they're more or less the same now.
Rip gaming.

That's pretty dramatic. If you hate camping so much, why play games that reward it?

Hate to say it but the complaint about camping is just being bad.

Good DayZ players play as if they're being watched 24/7. I'll instantly recognize a good DayZ player in my sniper scope when they're eternally strafing around in off-time rhythm.

Most players aren't good. Particularly the ones on Sakhal. They think they're playing a singleplayer game, hours into the map, and they need me to remind them that they're not alone (with a bullet to the skull).

Sometimes I feel bad for players, and will simply knock them out or break their legs, and let them escape.

Being more patient and willing to play this as a side thing while you're gaming on your phone doesn't mean you're good. It just means most can't be bothered with that because it's not real life. The irony is that people like you were usually the kind to tell me to touch grass in Rust because I didn't have to role-play it like a mil-sim with my 200M straf beams.

I like survival games, just not the low time-to-kill and low skill-gap gun mechanics that allow rats and general noobs to thrive. I only play this because I have zero other choice.

It's a sandbox game. There's no "winning". It's about having fun, and this is how I have fun with it.

And guess what: it's a guerilla-style milsim. It's the only reason why anyone plays it. Nobody plays it for the zombies. There's not really any other milsim experience that lets you take civilian hunting weapons against plate carriers and M4A1's.

Frame me as the bad guy, but it's really just naivety on your part. Squads of players on DayZ are basically murder squads. I'm just keeping the bullies in check.

My problem is more the current state of gaming than the people it rewards.
Shameless campers who couldn't get past silver in CS who make me dodge Zeleno because I don't have that kind of RP patience.
Also why I shamelessly log out in combat if you're too campy to push me.

+ you're visibly looking for reactions.

DayZ is kill or be killed.

You can be a sniper in a lot of games, your reward = other people's loot. It's just something for cowards. I'll snipe if I have to (gun fight or so) but not just to stay in one spot waiting for someone to come around so I can easily kill and loot them.

You think its bad, why? because you camp? only reason why you wouldn't like people complaining about it.

"Good DayZ players" and this is in your book called, Good DayZ Player, right? that's what you think a good DayZ player is. Most DayZ players know about snipers so, this wouldn't make them "good" but just experienced.

"Most players aren't good" because you know most players in the game, right? maybe they are playing the game like it's a singleplayer game (since there isn't an option for one unless you run a server) who are you to say they can't play the way they want?

And you kill them because that's what you do (probably snipe them or you pretend to be friendly)

"Sometimes I feel bad for players" no, you don't. "DayZ is kill or be killed" no, it's not. I let people go and people let me go. So, stuff you say aren't facts.

In DayZ, days are shortened. Alive for days in real life obviously means 48+ REAL hours versus DayZ hours (which varies from server to server but is usually sped up).

I'm just sharing my experience having fun with the game in the manner it was meant to be played. I'm a person who understands military tactics and understands how to utilize patience and preparation to beat other players. There's virtually no reason I shouldn't be incentivized to use my innate traits to win and have fun at the game. Nor is there any reason for me to believe that sharing my experience of having fun with DayZ and inviting others to share their fun is "lookng for reactions".

Also, I was competitive Counter-Strike player back when Counter-Strike was good. I regularly played Counter-Strike before it hit retail (in the beta days when cs_siege had an APC). And then when it hit Source, I played MLG and would even sub in for clan matches.

So in your mind, you're thinking I'm only winning because I'm playing DayZ in a weird way that lets me win. The reality is that I'm likely just a skilled gamer.
1337Dude Dec 18, 2024 @ 2:45am
Well...I died. I went out running towards the last tier part of the map looking for cool loot...and I got ran over in the dead of night. I don't think I've ever gotten ran over before. Definitely a peak DayZ death...

I have a nice stash, but it stings a lot all the same. The people who killed me definitely got fully decked out.
