Ambient Occlusion in Dayz - On or Off (for looks, not fps)?
Just curious as to whether people play with it on or off from a purely graphical POV. If does'nt affect my fps at all so that's not an issue.

I think it's a nice addition. Even if there is no such thing as AO in reallife, I like its look anyways.

This is not really the answer you are looking for but I play with it off since it improves my FPS and the graphical tradeoff isn't noticeable enough (for me) to bother.

Since it doesn't affect your fps, leave it on. :)

From a gaming POV would anyone say theres a benefit from leaving it off? I read that some players leave it off as it removes the dark shadowiness from around the trees therefore allowing you to see anyone thats prone/crouched in the grass

I am not the expert in game design and mechanics, but saying ambient occlusion does not exist in real life is basically saying that ambient lightning doesn't cast shadows. In other words, you are saying that shadows in real life are unaffected by ambient lightning and all shadows cast in real life have only one point of lightning.

AO increases accuracy of ambient lightning effects on a given object. For a character that can mean that there is less lightning under his/her armpits, or underneath a car. It 'occludes' surfaces or objects that are not exposed directly to a light source. It's actually meant the create a more realistic representation of lightning.

And do you play with it on or off in Dayz?

I haven's seen much of a change with Ambient Occlusion on, at least not in full sun (which is the only weather i see since last update). What actually tried to do, after someone here mentioning it, is to set brightness to max, then set gamma to your liking. World becomes more bland and colors are less saturated, which does a nice, more realistic look.
