KOS – Helping or destroying the game?
Before you go, “Oh no, not another guy whining about KOS-ers because he just got killed and lost all his gear.” Please know that I’ve survived for a long time now, and am guilty of KOS-ing myself. I’ve learnt very early from the start not to get attached to my gear/items as I’m probably gonna lose all of it easily to another player with a gun and falling (Falling is my worst enemy lately. But I’ve learnt how to pretty much avoid accidents.) I had very few friendly encounters with other players, and usually when there was friendly encounters there was a pretty big disparity in equipment. (E.g. I’m way better equipped with an M4 while they barely have a melee weapon.) However, I’m sure if they had proper weapons the encounters might have ended differently.

While I don’t personally advocate the KOS mentality, I understand that it is what made the game what it is today. It sets the atmosphere, the creeping paranoia that sets itself into your mind after your first couple of deaths. The way your heart starts pumping and the tension in the air when you hear movement or shots. I won’t lie, it is exhilarating when you come up top in a firefight or kill a gun-toting bandit with a crappy melee weapon. And I believe it has become part of this game, which I have accepted, that will stay.

However, too many of such encounters has left me hardened. I no longer seek social interaction and am content with just looting and keeping myself alive occasionally expending a bullet or two into a zombie’s brain. (Which still makes me smile.) But, that’s not the point of this game, it is an online game for a reason. There is a pretty awesome voice system for a reason. You are supposed to talk to people, not shoot the moment you see a head. If you wanted to shoot human players on sight, go play COD or whatever (Not ripping on COD, I used to play COD quite a lot). I watch videos online about people getting held up and forced to do stupid things, I rather that happen to me then get killed by some unknown guy with a sniper rifle.

Long story short, I believe that the KOS mentality is here to stay. Do you guys think that is keeping this game from its full potential? Is there a way to balance things out?

after that moment i was frozen i didnt move and he watches me and than i decide to put my weapon ready and i got killed i didnt want to kill him and im sure he didnt want also.
all moment was like 2 secs...
i was sorry about my stuffs but...

i killed because i was running outside like a deer without coatious..
now im spending 20 mins for scouting before walking inside dangerous places
Shoot or get shot, thats what i experienced.
The good old dayz days will never come back.
Kos just happens. It's because a lot of ppl buy the game and dont see it as a zombie survival game but as another multiplayer game. And because so many Kos has happened more and more ppl do it.

What I hate more then Kos is the freshspawns of most ppl who Kos. You see a freshspawn and want to help the person, but they turn on u in a second and before you know it your unconcious and they took your gear and start Kos.

I havn't killed on sight that much. Have done it from time to time and I admit to doing it because I got bored or needed to train my marksmanship skillz. ANd I know a lot of ppl who say they hate it have done it but are too afraid to admit it.

I will shoot someone that I will try to help and they either raise their fists or a weopon. I'll shoot without a warning. Why? Because it's hard to trust a lot of players. In a group I tend to help ppl more.

And I do KOS heavy armered players that camp and wait for ppl to come buy and shoot. And I've had many great firefights XD! The only way to beat Kos is by killing them :P

well you may got killd cause you pulld your gun out...everybody would shoot you in that situation...cause like..you wont pull your gun out to open a can of beans and share it friendly style
It does bring that extra to the game.
When your heart is racing wondering if he's gonna shoot you, or will he be friendly? XD

I'm with ya there. I loot up then seek out these types of players for fun. Better yet, I will camp hot areas as a fresh spawn and axe players with guns. It can be done...lol. There are plenty of @sshat players to go around, that is a definite. So seek them out and take them out. They will whine the most about being killed, that's why they camp and KOS. Happy Hunting :D
Kos is a bit out of hand. Spawning in and shooting someone in the back is plain cowardly.
It's server hopping that should be stopped first.
I pretty much always KOS. If someone is right next to me, I will sometimes say friendly quick before he starts killing me but i usually kill everyone.

Right now, its pretty much alll you can do. Until they add the sh*t load of zombies they said they will, its basically an apocalyptic simulator with like 2 zombies in the game. Its no fun just running around with gear and shooting one bullet at the 2-3 zombies in a town.

Killing others is what is fun right now. Try it, you will get a bit of a rush being in a huge firefight with someone.
It's somewhat ruining it. People say this game is about survival and social interaction but its not at all.
Survival in this game= Find food and water (dont in a few minutes to last a long time) and not die (like you would in any game)
Social interaction= Barely none. Most people shoot for fun. They dont even care. I dont shoot freshspawns, and i do have some talks sometimes, and its great to not be an a**hat.
Anyone defending the game with these points have no idea whats going on. This game is an open world deathmatch and nothing else. And as we all know it will be a LONG time until release, and it will still be like this

The KOS mentality is more or less about the loot you have or want, If you see someone who is unarmed he wont pose a threat to you at the moment, but he might sneak up on you later with a fireaxe, or maybe just run up to you and beat you up with his bare hands, they just spawned so they have nothing to lose. Plus if you want to take the risk to help a newspawn go ahead, but don't complain when he tries to take your beans.

I have seen players get knocked out with a lucky punch from a new spawn and lose their gear....I myself have taken on three players with a crowbar...one of them had an axe and the other two knives. Anyone can be a threat...or they could be a possible great ally. Which is what makes the game so great.
I KOS because ♥♥♥♥ you thats why!!
In its current state they should call the game DeathmatchZ. Hopefully it will become less 'deathmatch' and more survival in future updates. I think some KoS isn't bad when it comes to survival, but its current state is driving players away. Anyone who says that's a good thing for a game and community is hurting that community.

The game's intention isnt to survive vs zombies. It is based on surviving vs other people with a zombie theme. Zombie's have never been in any way shape or form a threat. KoS is probably the biggest social interaction people fail to realize the ture underlying reasoning behind it."Me or him." Risk vs consequence. Most people KoS out of the habit to survive with their gears, other KoS in order to get gear to increase their chance of survival. KoS is not cheap in any ways and this game is built around killing each other and surviving from each other with the element of pve at times taking habit during cities. Can't eliminate the killing, zombies suck and there would be no fear factor in this game. I would run through all cities laughing at endless free loot.
