better only go with 7.62x54 or .308 ammo for a bear, smaller calibres are pretty useless.

try to keep him at distance and go for the head - it should take around four headshots with above mentioned calibre to bring him down.

if he gets close, a shotty - preferably a Vaiga on full auto - is your best friend.
around eight buckshot hits should finish him.

(I dunno if they nerfed or buffed the bear meanwhile, though...it's a while back since I had my last encounter.)

You were very close Glen, surprised it took even this much, maybe you missed abit and got more meater parts instead of vitals. Keep trying it's how you win.

As the Wiki suggests, taking on a bear with something with less dakka than an AR or a top end heli spawn weapon is rather pointless. If you get jumped by one and you don't have a lot of firepower just let it hit you. They are territorial but after that they don't usually maul you to death unless you shoot them.

I had one in Namalsk I thought I managed to slip by, he pawed me once and ran off, just did my jacket, no bleed, no knockout.
