I get 1 water bottle. Empty it, fill it from a pump, and use it entire game unless/until character wipe. Other than that, I only drink canned soda.
Same for food...unless I kill an animal, I only eat canned food. No powdered milk, cereal or rice. People have been know to spray those with disinfectant and poison them...
Not that I would ever do any of the above, lol...just know of guys who do that stuff, and on a daily basis.
Wells can't infect you. Only ponds and streams. Had to be something else you did...
ditch the water and refill it at a reliable water source, such as a water well.
Seems like infection is just buggy. I've never gotten sick from water and I have used every different type of source. I got sick from eating cooked meat, but my friend did not - same methods of cooking, different animal though. However, I also got an infection just from driving. I was shot at a few times while driving but never got a bleeding status or even heard my character grunt, to signify he'd been hit. Maybe 5-10 minutes of driving time after the shots, I got out and had itchy wounds, which quickly turned into infected wounds.
I think infection is just buggy, or they mean to program it in such a way that it's random, i.e. only some animals are infected, only some water sources on a server are infected, etc. There's really no way to know for sure unless the developers release something to address this or someone applies the scientific method - which would take far too long as there are countless variables to consider.
Just get used to losing characters. Alpha.
If you are injured, in pain, bleeding and low health there is a bug that can cause this when drinking water (Mainly ponds) but rarely bottles or well.. it can be uncurable at times so always try to carry purification tabs.
G Luck!
Or a bug.
Are you sure that you didn't fill it from a pond, and forgot?
As far as I was aware, you couldn't get Cholera from a Canteen filled at a Water Pump.
