DayZ brightness issue at night
When I play during the night in DayZ, my display is so dark that I can't see more than maybe 5 feet in front of me most times. Yet on my friends computer, it looks like an overcast day, as in you can see very well and there are no brightness issues. We have the exact same settings in game. I raised the overall brightness of my display in my display settings, but it makes everything more grey, and doesn't really help that much with the actual in game brightness.

If it’s the same server, then that’s a bit odd. There’s a darkness setting that, for official servers, makes night really dark if it’s a first person server.

Try shadows. Turn them off. That might be it if there’s clouds.

depends...if you are in the same server its probably your screen, if not in the same server, its normal, because depending on server you can get darker and barely see only around you, and some other servers you can see at night very well even if not using lanterns or nightvisions.

The game has two different night brightness settings. On official 1PP/3PP servers you have the "bright" nights with strong moonlight, you barely need light sources or NVG:s on those. On official 1PP only servers you have pitch black dark nights, which sounds like what you're experiencing. Some monitors look brighter/darker than others too, which must be the issue if you were playing on the same server as your friend.

On community servers the server owner decides what setting to use.

on scum there was the bug nividia filter that made night just like day . in dayz before last patch me and a friend both with rx 580 had the same bug where the filter would bypass the grey foggy look when you turned up gamma and turned night to day but people with other gpus said they couldnt see ♥♥♥♥ in the dark with gamma turned up.....

I was on official with 3PP and 1PP, I turned the ambient occlusion on the highest level, and the nights have been brighter, it could just be that theres been a moon every night, and I haven't played quite as much, but its nowhere near how bright by buddies screen was. I'm thinking it might just be that he has a much better monitor, and I'm on a laptop. I'll see if I can get screenshots posted at some point.

Laptop screen lighting can have this kind of effect unless you’re playing on a very high quality one. Even just your angle of the screen to your eyes can make a huge difference.

And also, we are in the same server
