Dayz was a Arma2 mod that evolved into this.
Just how WOTA mod for warcraft3 evolved into Dota and LoL.
No offline, just online.
2 is straight into the game.
For official/unmodded use either, for modded stick with the launcher.
1) Opens the launcher. This allows you to browse servers and setup mods if required. Hitting "play" in the launcher will also load the game in the last configuration set by the launcher, e.g. if you played on a Namalsk server it will load the game with Namalsk mods already running etc. I personally use it to direct join a particular modded server.
2) Launches the game in its Vanilla state, regardless of the launcher setup.
Why this is needed instead of just being able to play the game offline, I have no idea...

that should be helpful but also watch a video tutorial because I think some things in there needed to be changed
