New map is meh
Edit: played for around 30 hours and i changed my mind. Loving the map!
Not on a full server tho, 20-30 people is more my speed. Still get tons of encounters.

-----------------

I've played Namalsk, I've played Cherno, Livonia... I have 1100 hours in DayZ.
Namalsk is cold and hard, but you gear up quickly and have a bunch of pvp on a tiny map...

Sakhal though... starting up is slow and tedious, you stroll to tiny towns by the shore that are picked clean of loot, have to kill a ton of zombies for knives/food/ropes, etc., and then have uninteresting fistfights with hungry strangers that want your ♥♥♥♥.
If you died, you have to go through this tedium again. And it's not like you can run deep into the map and start gearing up right away from the start, because you'll die from cold and hunger.

So yeah, starting up after spawn is slow, tedious and uninteresting, it takes a lot of time and feels unrewarding.
This is my biggest issue with the map and to be honest I regret paying for it.
The new sounds and assets are very nice but they won't carry the map.
I'm not even sure there's a way to fix it and make it fun to play without breaking it.

So yeah, if you have never done a hard map you might like it from the start but come talk to me after you've played 20 hours and let's see how you like it then.
If you're a Namalsk vet you will probably agree with me.

EDIT: Some more observations:

The towns are pretty small so loot gets picked clean immediately. They should probably up the loot respawn rate by a lot so you can at least find a damn gun and have some actual fun.
Hell, I haven't even seen a single 2-handed melee weapon in the 2+ hours I played.

Also - I haven't seen a single piece of winter clothing both on the ground or on a person. Like... what?

And you have to keep making fires every 10 minutes or whatever which gets tedious fast. I don't mind needing to make fires often... but hey, maybe not that often?

All of this tedium extends the starting phase of the gameplay loop artificially without adding fun or value.

I mean I hopped on Chernarus an hour ago and in 1 hour I had 10 times more fun than in over 2 on the new map. I had an awesome fight where I faced a trio with only a crossbow, I had another 2 fights against 2 duos, I talked to some people... all of this on vanilla.

Thoughts?

I have 5770 hours and have been playing the Mod since August 2012. Chernorus is the true masterpiece but the new map has me exited again like in back 2012 when I dies dozens of time before finding my first mosin and hiding in a house to log off. Disclaimer - I'm a PvE player and tend to avoid others, so survival against the elements is the main focus for me.

I got the same feeling than OP. i played the 2 other maps for 600+ hours, and i decided to refund this one. I don't have IRL time for a walking/fire simultor, i'll stick to chernarus/livonia for now.

First impression, only about 3 hours in …… digging it. It feels tough. The new inventory system hasn’t been much of an issue since I haven’t found a whole lot. Really enjoying the fishing update!

Aside from that, I spent half my time not knowing where I was and just running along the main road around the coast. Digging most of the new ambient sounds, but some seem wrong. Like a crow sound that’s heavily clipping (distorted) and other ambient sounds just abruptly cutting out. Patches of snow look weird and boxy in some areas. But somehow the infected seem to feel better, even though I’m fairly certain there wasn’t any update there.

I only tried a community PvE server, and I think they had the new view distances locked down because no matter what I set them to, no difference.

Feels a bit empty. Some weird performance issues. But kinda just seems like any other DayZ map. Definitely can’t wait to spend more time on it!

I'm too busy playing spooky Esseker to care. With Livonia being a slight exception, none of the developer maps are very exciting to play. It's almost if they're completely allergic to adding varied points of interests, layered objectives, etc. or anything that would add excitement or replayability to the map. They do the bare minimum, meanwhile single modders exceed their efforts by taking their time and channeling inspiration.

let me guess, still no zombies lol

Do know know what I've found hard about Sakhal. There are no water wells. Other than that I've been spoilt for loot that I actually need to survive, even though I did not have a choice of what I prefered...... A great things for this game. I found basic guns and small amounts of ammo quickly but the inv space to store all of the wildlife I killed was rare but I had enough bones to fish for months. and enough meat to hydrate me!

Just water......and now I know what to do with that I'm not even worried about water. I won't be eating snow but I did eat a good bit of human flesh I found on dead Z's.....you know.....just for the laugh. :humansteak::humansteak::humansteak:

They dont have wells but there are small structures with clean spring water that work exactly the same

Cooking Pots are OP meta .. Find pot, thaw over fire and boil to purify (or carry while in a car to thaw, then use Chlorine tabs) . None of the found "pot water" seems to have heavy metal poisoning possibility in my testing so far.

You're complaining about a game that is about surviving in a harsh, post apocalyptic environment, where resources are scarce, for being harsh, with scarce resources.

No offense, but the problem is you.

And, just in case you didn't know, they are tons of different types of servers out there. Some with ridiculously increases loot, if that's your thing.

The new map isn't going to be for everyone. If you have more fun on Chernarus, then play Chernaurs.

I love the new map. I like the increased challenge and the emphasis on survival. This isn't Rust. It is suppose to be like Rust. Where everyone is just running around blasting each other constantly. It's supposed to be a more realistic survival/adventure game. Not a battle royale with base-building.

With that being said, there are plenty of servers out there that cater to all sorts of different preferences.

The food management on the new map is pretty bad. Ok you want to talk about a cold-warm system?! The food is not melting from body heat, from heatpack, or small fire. Totally not realistic! The game essentially not playable.

I have made 10-15 fires so far. Most of them only with sticks which I threw into a stove. (Both the small and the large stove)
I have been able to defrost my food every time. I was usually limited by the amount of food/drink I had in my inventory. Not the heat of the fire.
And i really doubt you will melt a frozen can of food with your body heat. -> Keep in mind that the temperature of your skin certainly does not correspond to the core temperature. And the temperature of the skin is generally low on Sakhal/outside in winter.

You mean "infected"? since they aren't real zombies? (confusing since the game's info on the store page mentions zombies but then you have people saying they are just infected... which one is it?)

Sounds like the usual grind in these maps. Did this a ton in the Cherno map + starve to death, get sick quick etc. Playing in the Livonia map, hardly have to deal with these issues.

Even if you could run deep into the map, is that a guarantee that you'd find a ton of gear etc? what if it's been looted already? or does the loot stay there unlike the places that are always empty after you spawn?

You should have waited for reviews, watched some gameplay (to see how it is and get all the info you can get from it) before deciding to purchase it. Can't complain/regret it now. You had all the time to do what you needed to do before throwing your money on something you ended up not liking.
