What is the point of plate carrier?

I know it's got a lot more protection but this only seems to work against smaller arms fire and not sniper rounds. I was going around the coast in full gear when all of a sudden, I get popped once while running and fall over. You are dead..

I make it back to the guy who killed me, I ask him what gun and if he headshot me. He said mosin, no headshots but one body tap knocked me out and he double tapped. Then I proceeded to knock him out with an unseen shovel I had stored in my jacket

So my question. Why carry a plate carrier at all if you basically get killed in one sniper shot? That's the only gun I worry about really. I can handle close quarters combat just fine but I always seem to get tapped by a camping sniper (I am usually careful but sometimes you're just forced to run across open fields with no treelines)

they're likely low grade (NIJ level 1-2) plates that won't stop rifle rounds.
i am not aware of any IRL equivalents that'd protect you from a high caliber round that's fired from a legit sniper rifle. a mosin should not penetrate NIJ lvl3 so i'm guessing your plate is of a far lower grade

You answered your own question. They protect you from certain types of small arms fire. And they can let you tank a sniper round given enough distance for some of the damage to drop off. And they can turn an instant death into an uncon. Many times, when wearing plate, the first shot uncons you, and then they have to shoot you again, if they have an angle where they can still see you after you drop.

This is, somewhat, realistic. IRL a plate carrier can save you from shrapnel and small arms fire. But it wont save you from a high powered rifle. Unless they are shooting at you from very long range.

It's still worth wearing. It definitely saves your life and lets you take an extra shot or two in many situations.

It sounds like it did stop the round you got knocked out n he hit you again. I don't bother with the armor it's too heavy and if your gonna get toasted your gonna get toasted so why bother looting that crap. I run with bottom of the barrel stuff anymore i don't bother searching for high tier stuff cause you just lose it anyways. if i run into something nice i'll use it if not big deal.

I could see that, what was the range? I've gotten hit before n just messed me up. I had my jacket full of gear n it just ate the round i guess though my toon was messed up and this was without armor. it's just luck IMO sometimes you get smoked sometimes you survive.

Ive been on top of apartments in cherno and the adjacent block a guy shot me with 308 blaze. not sure if double or one but it ko'd me and i woke up with flashing health. so you can survive. i was just lucky.

Plate carriers give you a chance . it has shock absorbtion and damage absorption. not gonna always save you though.

It doesn't always prevent you from being killed by snipers, but it's greatly helpful in a firefight with low caliber rounds and you'll survive a hit from a 7.62 round which can make all the difference.

For me it's always been about the stamina trade if you're playing on vanilla style servers. Been in fights where I had to drop my plate carrier just to run and get out of a sticky combat situation. but as others have stated, you can certainty tank one sniper shot if it's far enough away.

Agree, DayZ need some fine update for Plate Armor, like get default Plate Armor, and do some updates with it. for ex. default armor weight will be 8KG, and same stats what now, but upgraded will be weight 10KG and +20% SHOCK protection and 5-10% protection for HP damage compared to default Plates.
Current Dayz Armor is very week, its even havent hand or legs armor. Hands and legs armor is not like on super-duper modded servers, but like Combat armor, that did well protection to this players body parts from shock damage and hp damage.

In general, the system of loss of consciousness is stupid, you can make it temporarily impossible to move, the effect of a blurred screen, but falling after a shot at any point of the torso is stupid, you will die anyway, because you are always finished off.

I am in favor of making the bullet damage less significant and adding an even stronger caliber, for example, 12.7mm, which instantly killed or gave the effect of loss of consciousness, but every time dying after 2-3 shots in complete armor protection from non-armor-piercing cartridges is stupid and unrealistic idc.

Is there something wrong with that? Why did you say the word legit, as if i used some cheesy exploit? He should have kept his distance instead of allow me to get close enough to power hit with a shovel
