Yes, you can host a locked server, although its not as easy thing to do like in different games, "Valheim" for instance. Theres a bit more clicking involved.
There is local text chat - which only displays messages in certain range and global one, for entirety of a map. But - not every server has global option available. To not break immersion for other players.
Third person is default mode in this game. One can switch between those two with a push of a button. But once again different servers have different setups - some are only for third person while others only for first person, without options to change it ingame.
And finally, this game is standing with mods, hand to hand. Its a very, very big part of the game and constantly getting larger. Dayz started as a mod and this characteristic is still very much alive.
a Pretty good PvP shooter with a strong survival element and limited base building.
Community servers however are another thing entirely.
Think every bad copy of every game ever made with guns in it
just about covers it.
2: Yes you can host your own server.
3: Yes there is ingame chat and Voice with limited range.
There are actually small handheld radios you can find that work.
4: Depends on the server some have either some have both.
It's usually stated in the server info, same as stuff like passage of time.
4,2: The modding community is huge and still very active.
Now is actually a good time to get into the game.
5: There are no "dumb questions" as a noob Mate.
Ask away.
But I like how they don't tell you that you have to pay to do so.
"Expect to pay a minimum of $50-$60 per month for a basic DayZ dedicated server with limited player slots, but be prepared: prices can reach $200+ per month for high-performance servers with large player capacities and advanced features"
This ain't 7 days to die, V Rising etc where you can host your own server for free.
They should add an offline/solo/co-op mode and let people create their own server for themselves and friend. Charging that much for a server is ridiculous. Gotta buy the game/DLC and pay for your own server?
What happens when they stop working on the game? I don't want to lose access to it just because they didn't add an offline/solo whatever mode for players to enjoy the game without needing them to host their official servers or when all the servers get shut down etc.
Also, about the camera options. The game offers 1st and 3rd person but there are servers which are strictly 1st person or 3rd person (I see 1st person a lot). Avoid those if you want to switch between 1st/3rd person whenever you want.
You can run a server from your own machine easily if you search how to do it.
There isn't a need to pay anyone to host a small server.
I end up saying the info I see (I looked up if you could host your own server but the answers I've found all came to people having to pay. I wish there was a Q and A thread because misinformation is everywhere and I seem to keep looking at the wrong info.
To me, if it was like V Rising/7 Days to die, you just start up a game/server and make it public or not, how many people can join, password etc no need for a separate machine.
This is confusing. What do you mean "install the DayZ server" ? I have the game installed, where do I get this server thing? a bit more helpful info would be useful. Looking things up can sometimes show you the wrong info.
This info is more for the people who do want to create their own server. I don't plan on doing that unless someone wanted to Co-op and RP some sort of The Walking Dead story.
Edit: as for the Maps. I know the DLC is optional but they tied Halloween Events to it. Do the Community Maps have something like that? spooky gear? and I like to stick with the official Maps.

Ah! now I found it. Gotta jump through hoops. Much simpler with the other games. Thank you for mentioning how to find the server. I never used "tools" so I had it checked off.
Wow... too much for my brain but at least now whoever wants to start up their own small server, will know exactly how to do it.
Find/download the DayZ Server in the "Tools" list and then follow this guide to set everything up. Thank you for the deep helpful guide :)
1. Install the server app from steam. It's pretty much a one-click installation.
2. Find and download a server.cfg settings file. From the official wiki for example. I don't think the server comes with one by default. Modify the settings in it with a text editor if you like, don't have to. Place the file in the server's installation location.
3. Open the properties for the server app in Steam. Add "-config=yoursettingsfilename.cfg" to the first text field you see.
4. Click launch.
5. Start Dayz and join your server.
The Halloween event isn't tied to the DLC as far as I know. The DLC map doesn't even have the full event, whereas Livonia does.
This is much easier for me to follow lol. I need simple steps for an easier time. Thank you because this definitely helped a lot. I might do this in the future :)
Um, if you check out the Halloween Event thread, you'll see they have a check list of what is in what Map. The new map has a couple of items.
The Halloween event has some items on Sakhal, but you can find the same things on Livonia too. There's no rule that says you must see a demon goat on Sakhal especially to fully experience halloween. :D
