How can i make gun shots quieter? The sound is destroying my ears.
I can only make the game very quiet, so i cant hear anything but gun shots, or what?
Theres no config edit for this? I have to route the game sound trough a limiter to play this game?

Perhaps a multiband compressor to compress specific frequency rages. With a normal EQ I suppose you could try to find the frequencies of the gun audio and notch those out but I feel like it’s too much of the spectrum and you’d end up neutering your entire audio.

Compressing and limiting may help keep the loud stuff quieter but would also make quiet stuff (ambience, footsteps etc) louder. But more balanced. I just personally like the guns to be super loud like they are. Every shot fired feels like 😈

I actually tried to do what the OP asked last night using an
old 48 band EQ i had lying around and was able to identify the correct
"Bands". While it can 100% be done with an EQ it was a bit of a faff and
not at all practical. I can't see any button to press or parameter
to adjust in settings, so, no "easy" fix for the OP.
Personally, like you i don't have a problem with the audio so...

Edit: I ended up using a 24 channel mixer AND the EQ.

Thx for your answers. I will route the game and my voice and everything through a daw and can process everything seperately and can mix and route everything how i want. And can even mix other sources to my voice channel like internet browser, music and stuff.

Have fun.

Ok, but the glock is 10 times freaking louder than this sporter thing.

Thx for trying that out, i enjoyed reading your comment. I guess your ears are thankful even when the loud sounds were not bothering you so much :)

Just sorry we could not find a reasonable solution.

All ok. I kinda knew i had to use a limiter. No problem.

so at what point does this trick possibly become a cheat? you know quieting some sounds while enhancing others.

never?
Edit: I'd liken it to using the color/contrast controls on your Monitor.

It's not as easy as you think and,, requires expensive equipment.
When i said "Not practical" i meant it literally.
Even as a cheat.
Besides, isn't that exactly what "peltars" do?
Pi Oct 28, 2024 @ 10:39am
its very doable and there are several options on hardware or software (often cheaper, lower quality but better than nothing) level to achieve it. it will take a while to customize the settings to fit your needs. the game is very unbalanced when it comes to different sound volumens, the argument for gunshots being realistically loud doesnt apply to a game.

Very cool. Another audio geek aye?

I don’t have much in the way of hardware…..a 31-band eq, BBE Sonic Maximizer laying in the closet and a whatever’s in my rack for my guitar rig which is hair a power conditioner, tuner and wireless.

I messed with mixing for a long time but mostly in-the-box with software.

bump.

I have a good solution for OP, not the only one using it and it works for me, my ears don't get killed anymore when I play Dayz and it also helps hearing footsteps better.

(I'm sorry this is the case because I also dislike this in a way, but I'm not gonna ruin my hearings for a game or to feel more immersed)

I used a software called 3appes sound lock, you can find it easily on google, it's a free software but propetary (it's not sketchy at all and it occupies 10mb<)

Practically you can set a limit to your dbs, if your volume goes above that, this program suppresses the really loud noises over those high dbs you set, it works really nicely.

It's like Loudness Equalization in your windows audio settings but not the same.

LMAO.

Now that it comes into my mind, if you have a good audio driver or headphones, YOU SHOULD ALSO HAVE this Setting (Loudness Equalization) in Control / Audio / Enhancement (Windows settings, No External Program needed)

Enable that and move your slides to the more close and lower for the sounds, it suppresses every loud sound and amplifies little sounds like footsteps.

ANOTHER GREAT SOLUTION I use is also Equalizer APO, but it requires a long tutorial to set it up for your specific headphones!!!

Yeah, i used to do the whole "band" thing. I actually played Bass
but ended up setting up the deck for Gigs.
I wanted to do it properly so i did an Audio Engineering Dip
Part time. I don't really do it anymore these days so most
of my equipment is pretty old.
I have 2 old decks, a 24 and a 36 track and i can loan a 48.
I have several old EQ's a spectrum analyser a "cro", most of
what you would expect.

Awesome dude! Yeah I played in bands ranging from skater-type punk to metal for over half my life. Turned 40 two years ago, cut my dreadlocks off and decided it was time to quit the current band. And it was such a relief…..not having to lug gear to shows (local bars and venues, never anything really crazy aside from opening for a few national acts)….load van, drive to show, unload van, wait to play, set up stage in a hurry, play 20-30 min set, tear down stage as fast as possible, load van, drive home after all bands are done, unload van, then drive another 40 mins home…..to get paid $0 usually. Maybe the occasional free beer here or there or like $150 that would go straight into our “band fund” for the next batch of merch.

I miss it but I don’t miss the part where it had become more of a chore. I’ve dabbled in mixing for probably over 20 years but really just a “bedroom warrior”.

Sorry. I’ve seriously derailed from topic!

When i say old, I mean old.. I'm retired now.
That's why i have so much time and money to spend playing games.
I still run valve amps for sound clarity Ha ha.

Ahh nice! Both my guitar amps are valve, or as I guess most Americans would say, “tube”. And you were doing audio back in the tape-cutting days then, huh? That’s awesome.

I’ve got about 20 more years before I can even think about retirement. Probably be dead before then. 😂
