The new map is awesome
I am having the best experience in DayZ for a very long time exploring beautiful Sakhal. Fighting the elements, scrabbling to survive - this is what it's all about. All the changes that have brought the challenge back to just pure survival are a massive step forward. Thank you Bohemia Interactive - and at only £20 it's a bargain too IMHO.

I'm finding it an interesting journey. After a couple of false starts, it's definitely a change from the other two official maps. I am not sure how much I like the pressures of survival being so constant, and there are a couple of questionable mechanics, but it's keeping me busy exploring so that's all good so far.

If it's anything like Don't Starve's winter Season... oof. Is that the challenge? just adding more things to worry about constantly? before was Hunger/Thirst and now? Hunger/Thirst/Warmth? and obviously, not getting killed by someone.

Now, if it was a solo mode with AI enemies that roam around, I think that would be more better, especially to ease the worry about getting attacked by some random player while trying to stay warm and find stuff.

I wonder how people will feel about this DLC after 2-3 weeks to a month's worth of playing it.

Like most things, do it enough and it becomes normal,
do it some more and it's easy.. Do it a little more and it's boring.
Enjoy it while it's fresh and new.

I agree, and I'm also someone that played Namalsk, I can see the love and attention to detail to certain houses re-skins, trees and snow effects that are completely re-done and really realistic feel to it, also the new sounds and atmosphere effects, it's just something else.

I know however that some skins are messed up and you cannot un-see that.

Another thing, performance for most people if not everybody, is atrocious, and I'm someone that gets 200+ fps on Chernarus and Livonia, Namalsk of course, it's a tiny map. On this map I get from 200+ fps on the coast to 70 fps in land, the fps just go down drastically, it never happened to me on DAYZ.

The survival aspect too, it's not as "easy" as Namalsk, I find Sakhal more difficult, less loot, the cold really kills you fast and you can't do fires in certain spots where the snow is (thing that you can do on Namalsk) I don't know now if they will make changes to Namalsk too, but def, the 1.26 update is great.

I just wish they added an NBC case to gather all the NBC stuff, the inventory nerf makes it impossible (as a solo) to obtain all NBC pieces and collect it.

I actually also like the change of wolf meat and bear meat, too easy to be fully geared and have "free delivery food" when wolf are hungry and attack you, well, not anymore!

I think we will also learn a lot of things so that they become second nature, I bet I am not acting as efficiently as I am in the previous two maps with regard to keeping warm and fed. It's all good fun!

Totally agree with you regarding the ambient sounds - they are very well done and immersive. Walk over a frozen lake and you hear the ice shifting and groaning. Nice animal sounds too. I am finding it generally much more immersive than Chernarus or Livonia. Go down to the docks at Petropavlovsk and look out at sunset - stunning!

I've played for over 100+ hours, still feels the same. The only thing different for me (now that I finally get to play in Livonia, yeah, I didn't get to experience it while it was purchasable) and I feel like the loot and hunger system is way better.

I don't know. Playing on Chern, I'd starve pretty quickly, barely find loot, get sick easily etc. In Livonia, lots of good loot (food, weapons, clothing) not too many rainy days to get you sick and the weather is nice.

As for Frostline, I feel like I'd die off the bat lol. Trying to stay warm while trying to find stuff without getting killed by someone? yeah, maybe after 100+ tries or so. I need to get the base game/maps down first before I suicide myself in Frostline.

The game hasn't gotten boring to me. Just like how some people can put 2,000 hours or more into a game and still keep playing it. It all depends on the person and your boredom meter.

Yeah yeah! Really enjoying all the ambient sounds! Last night I heard the wind slowly building up into a storm or blizzard. Sounded awesome. My only tiny little gripe is I wish they’d have managed to create a stereo effect for the wind. As far as I can tell it’s just a mono audio file, so turning your head doesn’t change the pitch/sound. I imagine that would probably be a bit difficult to implement though…..

Directional audio isn't difficult to implement at all, so there's zero reason why they couldn't

If the audio is played based on the weather, then all they'd need to do is place the "source" somewhere in the 3D environment that would allow you to rotate your character and change the direction you hear it from when the weather occurs. This is no different than ambient bird noises being placed inside of trees, but it seems they went for the mono audio in that regard as well because...? If Minecraft mods from 10+ years ago can implement their own directional audio to simulate high winds during a rainstorm, then Bohemia can create directional audio in DayZ

For how long the map was in development, you'd think that they'd of made directional audio instead of mono, but I guess developing the smallest map in the game with tons of reused assets and an unimpressive amount of new content can be very draining on development

Last night I about rage quit the new map.

Got a boat, headed south east to start checking out islands. Already hating having to work my way through the maze of ice sheets; I explore 2 islands then head farther south to a bigger island. I no sooner showed up and it was getting dark and I was cold. So, make a fire. Actually EFF it - I make a super fire, packed full of all the firewood and sticks it can hold ….. I’m probably gonna be sitting near the fire all night as I have no light source. Decide to go get a fish or 2 while I’m right at the shore.

Oh. Now a blizzard rolls in. I only cook 1 and 1/2 fish before my fire goes out. I decide I need to go out in the dark and find shelter. Quickly found an old little shipwreck that I could get inside and keep warm while I wait out the storm.

Soon morning comes. But now I’m cold again. Let’s try to make a fire on the deck of the boat! Whoa it worked, cool! Let’s cook the rest of that 1/2 cooked fish - wait, ANOTHER STORM just blew my fire out?!?! Gotta be kidding me. So now I just go exploring. Getting pissed.

Islands are a bunch of nothing with ruined homes that have nothing but tracksuit pants. Huge let down. Aside from the M416 and DMR I found in the one and only shipping container there was. That was a cool find. But no ammo and already set up with a Tundra & scope and SKS.

OK, time to move on. Let’s go back north. I go back to my boat and set off about 1 minute in, I suddenly see the red disconnect icon…..it’s midnight…..oh shiiiiii server reset and IM RIPPING IN A BOAT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FROZEN WATER.

Of course I log back in, no boat in sight, middle of the ocean, rapidly losing what little heat buff I had left. I swim back, took me down to yellow. Dry all my clothes and heal up a bit. Now I need another boat (which I saw at least 2 others on this island) but the bigger issue is a spark plug ……

I start scavenging. Then I decide to go take a peek for my boat with my hunter scope. Wtf?! There it is! Doesn’t look too far out, right?? My spark plug is in there and I know that boat is still yellow gas…..so I swim. And I swim hard and fast. By the time I made it I was red health. I speed BACK to the god-forsaken island I’m desperately trying to leave, thank god I have 2 heat packs on me just in case of emergency. I pop em. Nice. It’s helping. I get supplies to set up a fire. Oh thank the lord - ANOTHER STORM kicks in. Can’t light the fire.

So I pick up my campfire into my hands because I see people do that IRL all the time. 🤭 I go back to a shack that had a new fire barrel asset in it. I warm up. I made it by the skin of my sack.

FINALLY I got to leave the damn island. Headed back north and want to explore more of the mainland then head west. But it was getting late and I had to call it.

TL;DR: basically raging over misfortune after misfortune. Really wish they’d find a way to do a server restart and you don’t need to park and exit whatever vehicle you’re in.

I think its not that hard to survive.. 🙃
eliahu Oct 20, 2024 @ 1:41pm
well where are the real stuff we need like new crafting wepone ammo and building?
It needs more things to see and explore, that's for sure, especially on some of the islands. But I think it's a step in the right direction overall. Hopefully people will actually work together a little more to survive the elements, which means more people using their mics and actually communicating, rather than the killfest Chernarus has long become.
