missile strike?

so i was playing on an official server as fairly new and trying to learn the basic game before i go to some modded servers, any ways so i was in the northern part of cherno in the forest at night with no torch so couldn't see anything but out of the blue i hear like a missile or bomb falling then a massive explosion in the distance, is this like a random event? can they land on you and kill you if unlucky?

Edit: I've heard those bombings as well and I thought it was other players going crazy lol I didn't even know the Contaminated zones had their own loot...

There are random gas strikes across the map. You will here the artillery fire from the edge of the map.....followed by the gas strike explosion in designated areas all over the map.

There are two permanent static contaminated zones where certain loot items can be found.

BTW they are deadly if you dont have full NBC outfit.
