It does work. Badly damaged will take a shot and gets ruined - pristine a bit more than that.

Sounds like Badly Damaged is the stage before things get ruined. Basically, people have to subtract what it offers down by like, what? one? meaning, Pristine can take 4 hits, worn = 3, damaged = 2 and then Badly Damaged = 1.

As for everything else (clothing and the like) same thing, kinda. Just going off the top of my head while reading things.

Edit: I'm sure there's a very detailed list of stats and how things work with them + items. There's always an expert so, if they pop up, they'll let you know. Can always look it up on the internets as well.

Search YT for Wobo. He’s gotta have a video up about this. He’s a golden god when it comes to getting “inside” the game.

Every item in DayZ has "hitpoints" and every item in DayZ deals an amount of "Damage".
A fist does less damage than a knife, and a knife does less damage than an axe.
^^This is just the damage to the Item, or it's "Condition", and depends on what item does the damage, as to how long, or how many "hits" it takes to change condition.

Item Condition is separate from an Items "Protection"
- As far as I can tell from the game files, "Protection" does not change with Item Condition. "Protection" seems to be constant whether an item is pristine or Badly Damaged.
*Insulation Value does change with Condition level.
Below is an example of a Plate Carrier Vest: Look at "Hitpoints" under "GlobalHealth" and the "protections" under "GlobalArmor"
class PlateCarrierVest: Clothing { scope=2; displayName="$STR_CfgVehicles_PlateCarrierBlank0"; descriptionShort="$STR_CfgVehicles_PlateCarrierBlank1"; model="\DZ\characters\vests\plate_carrier_g.p3d"; attachments[]= { "VestHolster", "VestPouch", "VestGrenadeA", "VestGrenadeB", "VestGrenadeC", "VestGrenadeD" }; inventorySlot[]= { "Vest" }; itemInfo[]= { "Clothing", "Vest" }; weight=12000; itemSize[]={5,5}; quickBarBonus=1; varWetMax=0.49000001; heatIsolation=0.80000001; repairableWithKits[]={3,8}; repairCosts[]={75,50}; visibilityModifier=0.94999999; class ClothingTypes { male="\DZ\characters\vests\plate_carrier_m.p3d"; female="\DZ\characters\vests\plate_carrier_f.p3d"; }; class DamageSystem { class GlobalHealth { class Health { hitpoints=225; transferToAttachmentsCoef=0.5; healthLevels[]= { { 1, { "DZ\characters\vests\Data\BallisticVest.rvmat" } }, { 0.69999999, { "DZ\characters\vests\Data\BallisticVest.rvmat" } }, { 0.5, { "DZ\characters\vests\Data\BallisticVest_damage.rvmat" } }, { 0.30000001, { "DZ\characters\vests\Data\BallisticVest_damage.rvmat" } }, { 0, { "DZ\characters\vests\Data\BallisticVest_destruct.rvmat" } } }; }; }; class GlobalArmor { class Projectile { class Health { damage=0.30000001; }; class Blood { damage=0; }; class Shock { damage=0.60000002; }; }; class Melee { class Health { damage=0.30000001; }; class Blood { damage=0; }; class Shock { damage=0.25; }; }; class Infected { class Health { damage=0.30000001; }; class Blood { damage=0; }; class Shock { damage=0.25; }; }; class FragGrenade { class Health { damage=0.5; }; class Blood { damage=0; }; class Shock { damage=0.25999999; }; }; }; };

Thanks that's good info.

Insulation says it changes with Item condition. when clothing gets damaged it becomes a lower rating for warmth (very high -> high -> low e.t.c
