Clunky close range combat

Ive played this game i ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ long time, and i know that this game is at its amazing best when you are sneaking around nwa trying to get the goodies and get out. Long range combat and backpeddaling through forests away from squads have given me some of my all time most stressful, memorable, and fun moments in all the games ive ever played. It can get pretty scary and adreniline pumping, especially when you just get popped when you think you are safe. Instant "You are dead". But somehow, this game also manages to have the clunkiest close range combat ever.
Before i continue, can a coder please explain why it is so hard to make the 1 key pull my gun out when i press 1? and not an 80 percent chance to not work and 20 percent chance to happen 70 years later when im in my deathbed? Ive done a tiny weeny bit of sql and python (Like a scrub :)) but i really don't understand where the error could occur?
Anyways. Im at nwaf when someone starts to shoot at me while im eating in a tree.

Finally he ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ puts his peaches down and i try to use the number keys to pull out my akm.
Hahahahahaha nooooppppe ♥♥♥♥ you no way im getting that ♥♥♥♥ out. 9999 button presses later he pulls it out and immediatly puts it back.
At this point im somehow still alive (semi hidden in tree) getting pelted at by a fal and scared as ♥♥♥♥ because it sounds ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awesome (At least the guns sounds are amazing :)). i peak out of the tree to shoot at him while he is next to the wall of nwaf tent compound. spray my whole clip trying to scare him off so i can hopefully bandage and move back to flank. reload time. Press the key to my ak clip. Nothing. Go into inventory and drag ak clip to akm. Recieving...... jesus christ ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ RELOAD THE GUN. Guy has already moved around and pops me in the anus while im ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ around.
Now all these ♥♥♥♥ ups would not have been so bad if i was some 200m away sneaking up on some guy. With out all the nervous and panick and general not having to do any actions particularly fast i might be able to wave it. But when it gets to <20 metres (what i was in) these issues start to get in the way of a normal fight and it goes to shananigans.

Stopped at the hearts, but this is why we're getting a new player controller... Among other reasons.
