On Cherno, you can go along the coast, from one tier 1 area to another tier 1 .. it will be the same on Livonia, back and forth on the river, across the tier 1 areas ..
Lets say they do make a Lake on Livonia .. so now you have a boat in a small lake, you are a sitting duck out in the open, the boat is "land locked", they can't be carried or moved to another body of water .. seems pointless. (like Helis on a map that is only 15km across).
The main problem with cars was always accessibility. Groups can easily hoard most of them on a server, gatekeeping everyone else. Incidentally, that's one of the reasons I ruin any cars that I'm unable to steal during my raids. I'm allowing new players to find them.
Exactly, in my opinion, this behaviour creates better experience for all the other players across the game. I don't get the car hoarders approach, well I understand they need the feeling of "I need to have it so that no one else would have it".
It is good that they made the boats stuck to the sea on Cherno. It is just a gimmick, the full potential of boats would be opened on Sakhal, in my opinion. They are just for testing and to play around with on Cherno and Livo so far.
Getting more and more excited for Sakhal.
I see it the polar opposite .. At least with a car, when someone starts shooting at you, you can turn off the road and try to escape .. with a Boat on Livonia, you are stuck in a narrow "river" with no where to "turn off", and if you jump out, you can't even run for cover .. you are slowed and exhausted from swimming, and can't even dive under water. Like Fish in a Barrel.
On a positive note though, they did do a good job with the physics, compared to mod boats .. You can run them right up on shore, and they don't catapult to the moon or flop around and flip upside down, and the sounds are half decent. They also actually float above the water, rather than down in (half-under) the water .. much better for the shallow waters on Livonia.
The boats are not a replacement for cars. They are just a fun way to reach certain places on the map quickly.
If you get shot and lose the boat, you can just follow the river and you will find it eventually. Or just take one of the other boats that you will inevitably spot on the way :)
The river could also be decorated with more reeds, so it would be more difficult to spot the boaters. That wouldn't take long, maybe a couple of hours.
Placing more reeds won't do much, when you can hear them, and know they are literally a stones (or grenade) throw away.
I'm willing to bet there are going to be dozens of posts complaining of players griefing or camping the boats after official release, and it's going to make more players want to stick around the spawn areas, (or return to them after getting geared) instead of traveling south, just so they can "play with the boats". Sure, the boats are neat, but they are really going to mess up fresh spawns worse than it already is with grouped spawning.
Like was said above, they make sense for the new map, but I won't even bother with them on Livonia, and probably rarely on Chernarus .. At least on Chernarus they kinda make sense around Prison Island and Skalisty.
