Are wolfs NARCS or was there someone else with me?
https://streamable.com/k2fzic

I was in the top floor of a 3/4 story building and saw some wolfs sniffing close to a place where I passed. Watched them and then suddenly they B-lied about 200m from where they were to the building where I was and started making a fuss at the bottom floor.

Now I'm wondering some things:
1) Were they capable of seeing me on the top of the roof?
2) Are they going to stay there making a scene until they are killed?
3) Or was there someone else with me in the building and that's what triggerred them?

I stayed there with them barking for about 10 minutes. I checked all floors except the ground floor and didn't see anyone.. then I had to quit. But I'm curious about their behavior... If they saw me at the top of that building and would just stick around barking; that's a bit too punishing IMO.

edit: btw, I never heard them howl. I don't know if the howl is something only the "hunted" players hear or not.

Wolves cheat.

sounds right to me for wolf behavior.

they "smell" you and aggro.

they will stay until restart, they are killed (kill over half or most, they run away, however they can return)

the howl was supposed to have been fixed, but sometimes you do not hear them, while other players may. so it is possible for another player to hear them and locate you.

fyi, if you hear wolves, run to them and attack them. don't be ♥♥♥♥♥

Climbing on a big rock or a car used to be the best "cheese" move.
You could kill them one at a time with a knife.
Iv'e not played vanilla for a while so it may have changed.

thanks for clarifying

Hopefully there will be a bit of a fix for this, considering the addition of new animals with 1.26.

Now, I don’t know how far wolves can smell IRL…..but the distance you hear them howling at seems pretty damn far…..and for them to have ghostly silent footsteps it seems…

Of course this isn’t an issue when you’ve got guns and ammo but to someone who managed to get a bad hand, bad RNG or just simply ended up following someone else and getting crap loot…..a game-ending wolf encounter can be extremely frustrating. I only say this because I’ve been there. 🤭

quick google search, wolves are noted to be able to smell prey 1.5mi (2k) away. seems about right for the game wolves.

the realism argument is moot. it's a game and things need to be balanced. if this isn't so, then why can you only gather rocks of a specific size, roundness and color when you need a rock to smash things? thy can't you cut branches from fallen trees but need specific breeds of trees to do so... they do the latter to balance the game so it isn't excessively easy. on the same token, if wolfs are considered OP (I personally think that if you are in the 4th story of a building you shouldn't get a random pack of wolves barking at your footstep) they should be balanced.

^^ Or if you run inside a house and close the door. If you don’t have a way to kill them off, you’re almost 100% completely done for. There’s no waiting them out….unless maybe if you log and wait for a reset or 2. But that’s no fun.

I do keep forgetting about being able to throw bones and meat to distract them. Surely they’d be right on you again in seconds if you make a run for it.

no argument about realism,it is video game after all. just stating that it happens to be about correct as irl. lol

gotcha

you mentioned the howl sound; a bit later I was followed by another pack of wolves. two things I noticed:
1) their howl is insanely loud; to the point I had to lower my volume so it wouldn't pierce my ears
2) I couldn't tell which direction they were coming from by the sound. Seemed like the sounds was shifting around basically each time coming from one directin. Maybe they surrounded me? But I think they usually stick as a pack before attacking

From my observations (using ESP /admin tools), Wolves generally start howling when they are within 150~200 meters of any player, but sometimes will be silent until they are within about 100 meters.

From game Code, the "safe radius" is 200 meters; meaning no Wolves should spawn when a player is within 200 meters of the spawn point for the Wolves, IF the player is there first .. If the Wolves have already spawned in and are roaming, it is possible for you to spawn in when there are already Wolves closer than 200 meters to you.
- This only applies to your character spawning in .. if you are traveling, the Wolves will just spawn in at 200m from you, if they are not already spawned in and are roaming when you get to that area .. Wolves (and other animals) are Ambient events, and do not only spawn in when a player is near. They spawn in randomly, and exist even without a player being in proximity to the territory.
