You can run into most wild animals in fields or close to tree lines, so you don't really have to go searching for them in the woods. There's also a decent chance you can run into wolves at buildings/landmarks near the woods since they may spawn nearby and come to you, thus eliminating the need for a search
Unless there's some sort of landmark that people are interested in that's in the woods (mainly hunting stands), it's better to just take the roads or go along the tree lines since it can be very easy to get lost in the woods by making one bad move, especially if they're a larger patch of woods and/or a forest on a hill that prevents you from seeing the other side of it. This is why it can end up being more harmful for you to go through the woods unless you're pretty confident of where you're going since you can end up overshooting/undershooting where you wanted to go and end up lost
The most I've usually heard people discuss regarding the woods is taking the trails marked with the various colored logos marked on trees and rocks since they offer some direction through the woods, so you can use it as a shortcut while also guaranteeing you won't get lost
For that reason, travelling in the woods is the single safest way to stay alive in DayZ. I personally go lenghts to find that single treeline that allows me to cross an open field.
Woods are the best, I was traumatised when I tried Takistan for the first time.
I seemingly got shot in the woods in Livonia few days ago. Seemingly. Just went uncon suddenly. I was wearing a ghillie suit. Only few players on the server.
So I went uncon, and then a follow-up shot killed me immediately. My "BS" alarm was ringing hard, so I closed the game expecting my car (which was next to me) to be lost.
Couple of days later I went back. My car was untouched. My barrel stash (10 meters away), was also untouched. How odd.
Maybe it was some quirky player who's super good at spotting ghillies hiding in the spruce saplings, but doesn't like red Gunters :)
It might be believable if my clothes were ruined (very unlikely, but possible), but for everything in my clothes and containers to be ruined is just not happening
