Keep in mind that Namalsk has a lot of water and ice areas with nothing to explore that’s also counted in the map size.
Yeah, that's inaccurate, Alteria is pretty much twice as large as Namalsk. People just see the square km numbers but don't realize this includes water, and also the ice sheets in Namalsk's case as well. But no one is playing on the ice sheets apart from bee-lining it to the outpost, sub or oil rig and back to the land where 95% of people are playing. Just give it a try and see, or a simple look at a map site will show you. Alteria is 8x8 pretty much all land. Namalsk's land mass fits inside a 7x7 and even then about 1/3 of that is water or ice. Alteria's airfield alone is like half the size of Tara island.
Also, even though it's not a negative for Namalsk specifically, since it's part of the lore and works for that map, Alteria has a lot more structures, towns and locations to explore (this is John McLane / Deer Isle creator after all), so there is a lot more stuff packed in that 8x8 land mass as well.
