Curious about YOUR ping....
Hey everybody! Hope youre all doing well, I am curious what kinda ping you are all getting and what kind of internet you have.

I am asking because my ping seems to be a little too high, I want to know if I need to contact my ISP and pay for them to get out here and fix something - or if they can fix anything.

I know ping depends on a number of variables and these are different for everyone, but I just want to see if anyone has a similar setup as me and if they are getting better/worse results OVERALL just to give me an idea of what I should do next.

K so I Googled "speed test" and ran 3 consecutive speed tests back to back.... the results were:
Download-> 131, 235, 180 Mbps
Upload-> 13.8, 13.5, 13.4 Mbps
and Ping was 1ms every time.

Are these good speeds? Good enough for online FPS gaming?
I am located in Boise Idaho.

The issue im running into is finding servers that usually have high pop AND have a good ping. I usually just sort the server list by "Population". I just looked at servers and sorted them by the population - highest first, heres what I got :

(server name) (ping)

LoneSurvivor#1 ----------------------185 ms
TheBeanBandits ------------------------113 ms
DayZUnderground --------------------139 ms

Then I ran a second server search right after and got:

Trumps Wall ------------------- 120ms
TheBeanBandits --------------- 127 ms
Dystopia [US] #1 -----------------134 ms

So I am noticing I get completely different servers minute to minute.... is this normal? And is my ping alright? Right now my ping speeds seem to be pretty low surprisingly (of course the only time I get decent speeds is when im trying to complain about my high ping). NORMALLY most of my ping speeds are around 130-150ms.

ALSO, I am getting booted from servers sometimes because my ping spikes up to freaking 800 ms... its not often, but its enough to where its annoying as heck.

The internet comes in thru a cable cord, hooks into the "main" box which is upstairs. I am downstairs, down here I have an "extender" of the upstairs box ... it hooks into a cable cord just like the main box upstairs. I hook my PC into this extender with a ethernet connection.

I would sincerely appreciate any advice you guys can give..... Mainly im just curious what kinda speeds everyone else gets compared to where they are / internet speed.

On a unrelated note..... it seems like the biggest problem I have is finding a server that: has a high population, low ping, not modded too much. I see servers with high pop/ low ish ping but theyre modded so heavily it is too different from the core game in MY OPINION.
Trumps wall for example has way too many guns. I find all sorts of different ammo/ attachments/ magazines etc but it takes too long to find the entire gun.
I dont need or want 150 different weapons anyway, the 0.62 DayZ had plenty of guns.
Then other popular servers have stuff like missions, trading posts, start you off with mid game stuff.... I guess the problem is that I just want something a little more simple.

First world problems, am I right?!

Yer pings seem fine, pretty good even. Anything under 200 is playable. I have run into the same issue, that is finding hi pop servers that I like, often. Here are a few servers which are "tastefully modded", ie no frickin traders and no unlimited stamina. They are all awesome, way better than vanilla, but need more players to get to a real hi pop situation. Most tend to run 20-30 players most of the time, which is not uncommon on vanilla either. DUG is the best example, but it's always super full. There are many like it which for some reason aren't as popular. Note I only play hardcore 1pp.

New Dawn DayZ
ENDZONE 1
DayZ Underground
Baby Nades Island
DayZCore
Barely Infected's the Village Chernarus
PODPIVAS Chernarus

There are lots more, but these are the best I've found with a growing player pop which looks like it will acheive hi pop status, by which I mean an average 50 players or more.

I noticed Germany/ Sweden/ Norway etc seem to have amazing internet... often times ill play with my German friends on a U.S. server and theyre getting either the same ping as me or better.
I guess that isnt surprising because a lot of the worlds greatest minds / engineering/ products/ innovation come from that area. Lately it seems like Germany is kinda committing cultural suicide though, it seems like your government (and the EU) doesnt care for its own people. I wouldnt know because I dont live there, I only see things in the "news".

Im from the U.S. and I wouldve thought we would have some of the best internet in the world, if not the best but we dont. It looks like we actually have some of the worst internet in the developed 1st world. Wow. Pretty lame.

Hahaha, I logged literally thousands of hours on DUG back in the 0.62 days. Right when 0.63 came out I went from a daily DayZ player to not playing DayZ at all almost overnight.

Im just now FINALLY getting back into DayZ. I was whitelisted on DUG, I went to hop on the server and I am banned for some reason. Its clearly a mistake (I wasnt banned before, then I didnt even log in for months) and I just wrote the admin on their Reddit page yesterday about it. Im currently waiting for them to remove the ban.

So what kinda ping do you get on the servers you listed? And do you live in the U.S?
I appreciate your response!! I also prefer 1pp hardcore "organic RP" servers, although I still prefer the no stamina days of 0.62 - I mean, I prefer A LOT of the stuff from the 0.62 days honestly. Not sure why....

The thing is you can have the best internet in the world but the data still has to get there and back physically. Europe has way shorter paths than the States.

Of course its about distance, that was exactly my point... Despite me being in the U.S. on a U.S. based server AND having a download/upload speed of about 150 & 13 Mbps (respectively), my two friends in Germany manage to get equal/lower ping than me while on that same U.S. server. They are accessing a U.S. from the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, I am only a few states away...

Clearly their internet speeds compensate for the distance, thats the only explanation which is why I am saying they have amazing internet speeds.

Thats why I was curious what kinda internet speeds / ping levels other people in the U.S. have, it feels like I should be getting lower ping than what I am getting. He mentioned he was connecting 'from' Germany but he never mentioned where he is connecting to... I assume its a German/European server because of his ping..

But even if he is connecting to a German server, thats still an insanely low ping!! I am in Idaho and Im connecting to a server thats based in Texas - to be clear, Texas isnt in the name of the server, the actual server location is in Texas. I am 1200 miles away from the server Im using and I get a ping of 140...
Lets assume for the sake of argument that he is in Germany and using a German server. At its widest point Germany is 517 miles wide. Lets say he is located 517 miles away from his server location and gets a ping of 15...... It doesnt take a math whiz to see how much better his German connection is based on the ratio of ping/ distance.

I see his upload speed is 35, the highest ive ever seen mine is 14. However, his download is only 100 whereas mine is usually 150- 175 Mbps. Its interesting....

IDK, I still think I should be getting better ping :/ the majority of "ping" values I see in the server listings are orange/ red instead of yellow/ green.

But if these speeds / ping is normal and good I guess I can be satisfied.
Thank you for your reply!! :)

Server centre is frankfurt/germany.. one of the best connection spots in eu. im living around 160km away. Pings at max 30 is normal on every german server i play..

Yes, the distance really matters. I have similar ping to you on most servers, ie around 150, but I have a friend irl who has a server which I know is physically in the same state as me, in fact quite close, and my ping on it runs 15-30. Sometimes as low as 5, which is better than his on the same server. Go figure.

your ping wasnt 1ms, that's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

To the point. My usual ping is between 35 to 60 to dayz servers. anything below 150ms is playable. Under 100 is prefered when driving
