How can I make a new character?
How do I make a new character? Is it at all possible?

I bought this game years ago but never really played it. After they trolled The Day Before on Twitter I thought I'd give the game another shot. I spawned in with nothing of course, and a zombie spotted me from just about as far as I could see... the damn thing wouldn't leave me alone so I jumped in some water to swim away from it, but it beat the nuts off of me beforehand. I used all the bandages I had at spawn, but my character keeps passing out every 1 minute of moving. I can't make any progress.

It seems like there are two characters, but trying to play as the second one just loads my doomed one where he just keeps constantly passing out.

I just wanted to play the game, why isn't there an easier starting area or something so you can learn the controls and mechanics, etc...?

Fainting from low blood.

To make a new character you have to die and respawn.

Some friendly advice, this isn't really a game you just jump into and have fun. You have to put in the time to learn the mechanics to understand what's going on before you become a piece of the moving machinery.

Edit: Unless you have friends helping you.

I did eventually come across a 2nd zombie, that beat me to passing out another 4 or so times before finally dying haha... never played a game where it's this difficult to die. And the zombie just stands there so when you wake up he's already hurting you (which is fine for my purpose here). I don't get it

The zombies usually walk away after they have downed you, sometimes e.g. in an enclosed space they won't.
You don't have to wait till you die, you'll get the option to respawn every time you fall unconscious. Just hit Esc while unconscious and you get the respawn option, choosing to respawn will kill your unconscious character.

Melee fighting zombies or players: Walking backwards while holding RMB allows you to block their attacks. When fighting zombies just keep an eye on their attack patterns, use the short breaks between their attacks to hit them.

That hasn't been my experience regarding the zombies walking away. On the character for this thread, it took about 4 times of it downing me to finally die, each time was outside in an open field and he was within eye sight of me each time I woke up. As soon as I walked forward he was triggered by me and ran after me. After I died and made a new character, I had it happen to me once outside too, and again he just stood there (though luckily this time I had a backup melee weapon in my inventory). This is a really poor mechanic to me, especially since you lose any equipped weapons when you are downed... I get it, you shouldn't get downed, but if you do you get caught in this loop of getting blacked out constantly. You can't seem to outrun these things, so if you get downed and lose your weapons, you're just caught in this loop. I don't really understand.

Thanks for saying the tip about pressing esc while downed. I haven't tested it yet but if true that's very helpful. I have no idea why the game wouldn't tell you that, though...

2, 3 years ago the infected would continue hitting u when uncon - til death.

and yes, usually they walk away now. and this is my experience after getting downed dozens of times by them.

the respawn dialogue has to be enabled server-side to be able to respawn while uncon. i dunno how it is by default on official servers, but i know some community servers turned that option off.

My answers always apply to official or the vanilla game (in the sense of no changes to the game at all) and there the unconscious respawn still works.

What you are describing is a beginner problem. The zombie AI is really dumb and repetitive.
There are multiple ways to outsmart them. You will get better at this with practise - this might involve dying a lot.
The zombies get often triggered by sound, so walking crouched and slowly (sneaking) while walking past them or after you have been downed by them should already make a difference. And as already mentioned, you can block their attacks, recognise their attack pattern and kill them, even with your bare hands.

I have one character on first person only and one on third person allowed. if I try to load the first person only character on a third person, it transfers the third person character. So in order to play a fresh character on a different server, that's how I've got two, also the one for the steam server you get with the game. mousing over "play" on the character screen will tell you what server it was on.
