The Field Shovel for digging?

From what I see, it's heavy, it takes up 10 slots. Can it be repaired? It has a bit more durability over the farming HOE (5 vs 3 for durability degradation). If it is good for melee, great, I'd still rather pack the lighter, repairable farming hoe. Am I missing something, or is this as stupid as the DMR having no option for silencer besides the darn bottle BS. Realism get gone, make it silenced any other way.
