This is correct. Chernarus Spawn areas are on the East coast and South coast. Some spawn points are better than others, but if you forget about finding packaged food, and "live off the land", you can spawn anywhere and thrive ..
I would recommend having a look at the online iZurvive map, which will give you a better idea of which direction to travel after spawning in, to find the most appropriate early-game gear .. A knife, Clothes, Duct Tape, and a Water Bottle.
How do i know which direction is inland?
If you are right on the coast, go the direction that is away from the water .. If your spawn is slightly in-land, you will need to walk for a bit to find a landmark, then check a map to see where you are, and which direction to go .. If you can not find a Tourist Map, there are large Maps at several Trail Heads .. find a hiking trail and follow it to the end. (if you are on a populated server, travel just off the trail, but where you can still keep track of its path .. some people camp trails, roads and train tracks for easy kills of new players (which make no sense, since new players usually dont have good gear worth taking).
Best to start with basic survival and get your health up first and formost! Hear that chicken crowing? That's your meal ticket buddy! No knife? Check the train tracks and hiking trails for small stones, combine 2 to create a stone knife, gut that chicken, wash your hands at a pump, craft a Hand Drill Kit https://dayz.fandom.com/wiki/Hand_Drill_Kit start a fire and eat that delicious chicken buddy! Rinse and repeat until yer health is bueno! You may now make fishing hooks, craft a fishing pole, fish and eat baby! NOW go look for your car!

You'll have to find a server with some kind of illicit drugs mod.
As it was intended .. surviving is not easy. Good to see you stick with it, and not get big-mad cause it's too hard like many do.
If you need more help, or just have questions, do ask, people generally want to help those that are looking for help, rather than complaining.
You really should not drink directly from any river or lake/pond, as you could get sick. You can safely drink from Wells with clean hands.
Drinking with Hands is very slow to increase hydration .. minimum 10 circles/cycles of drinking, compared to a half a bottle or half a canteen.
- Never run, unless absolutely necessary (from avoiding infected/zombies or another player). It uses resources, and starting off running everywhere, you are certainly going to starave allot sooner, and likely get sick.
- Find a cutting item ASAP. I search train tracks for 2 small stones (go back and forth for say 1/4km for 3min for them to spawn) or hiking trails (use iZurvive map). I will sometime search the closest houses/industrial locations, but it's risky. A single fight with infected/zombies will reduce your health by %50 if you get hit, or worse. Don't mess with infected at first. Sneak/Sprint and sneak EVERYWHERE they are. Backstab them if possible. Again, I don't mess with infected when I'm starting out if at all possible. It will guarantee a poor start.
- The SECOND I hear a chicken clucking or crowing it's dinner time, even if I don't have a knife yet. Punch that chicken and pop it in your inventory ASAP.
-Small fruit trees in yards and along roads are good for searching for fruit. IF none are aound, come back 2min later and see if they spawned.
- NEVER eat your food item in 1 go. Take small portions (1/4) over a min or 2!
Once I have eaten said chicken (washing hands prior to eating) and possibly getting a drink at a well (again, avoiding infected completely) and the fruit I collected, I generally head inland to the nearest towns off the coast, preferably Scout Camps if nearby for warm clothing. Occasionally I'll craft a fishing rod using the chicken bones for hooks if I am pretty far from a Scout Camp/Small Mil Base and catch/cook say 2-4 fillets for my journey. I take at least 2-4 fruits and whatever is left from chickens, if I found more than 1.
I generally don't waste any time savaging in the Coastal towns, other then perhaps a well for washing/drinking, that first chicken or 2, and a BASIC search in structures with NO INFECTED around. I will collect clothing to craft rages for gloves pretty quickly if possible, as you don't have to wash hands wearing gloves FYI.
Once my stats are full white, it's off the the nearest Scout Camp, then NW or whereever my journey is taking me (usually NW).
Hope that helps!
