DayZ
Fruit tree spawn mechanics?
I just started playing DayZ, and I'm a bit confused on how I'm supposed to avoid starving when playing alone. I joined an official server and approached a small town, looked around an orchard for any apples already on the ground, then hid in a corner for 30 minutes while watching youtube on my other monitor. I got up, checked the orchard and there were still no apples. So I ran to the other side of town and the trees over there had no fruit under them either. I swing back to the first orchard after 10 minutes of waiting at the other side and finally find fruit. One dried apple and three rotten apples. 40 real time minutes for one edible apple.

Googling, there doesn't seem to be any concrete number on how fast fruit are supposed to spawn when a player approaches and "activates" the tree. Am I expected to waste 30 minutes of my life every time I play a fresh character just for food to appear? Of all the infected I killed, only one has ever dropped food so far. This seems like a massively petty mechanic that doesn't really achieve anything other than gatekeeping the rest of the game from people unwilling to wait for food to spawn to prevent starvation.

Is there something I'm missing here?

well yeah to be honest i dont like the fruit spawn mechanic either, but you shouldnt struggle that much to find normal food in buildings. but still its not suppose to be easy to survive the first 20 mins of gameplay freshspawn. if you mix all this with killing chickens (in most cities), washing your hands and starting a fire (even without matches) to cook them, you should survive

There's no exact time delay for the fruit spawns. It can be 10 seconds or 10 minutes, and even then chances of getting a fruit is random. I suggest you first loot around the town for few minutes, then go check the trees, and just move on to the next place.

Rotten fruit, vegetables and mushrooms are safe by the way. Just don't eat more than one at a time, but wait about 10 minutes between them.

Don't camp Orchards. very few trees, if any, in orchards, actually spawn fruit (this is supposed to change in the next update, v1.23) .. you want to look at the trees in the yards of houses and cabins, or along roads .. Spawn time is usually less than a minute IF there are any trees that spawn fruit .. You should also start looking for Mushrooms, found mostly near DEAD trees, or around Hay Bales.

You can look at the on-line iZurvive map and filter for fruit trees to see the types of locations to find them.

Same goes for Packaged food .. don't look where you think it should be (large apartments in the cities), but look where evacuees would stash it, such as in car wrecks, or smaller Village cabins.

Orchads often do NOT spawn fruits. You have to be near more single trees in the villages and iit should take about 5 minutes for the first fruits to spawn. They will spawn even more when you stay longer in a certain area. You could loot a town and after this you can go back for the fruit trees to pick them up. Also it is easier to press TAB when looking at the ground next to a tree.

Depending on the server, you might be able to shake a fruit tree also, if so fruit may, or may not, drop.

That is a Mod, the OP stated they were on Official no mod server.

Also, if it's on a community server the fruit spawn rates could also have been adjusted.

I missed that, thanks

Well, after starving to death three times and then getting shot to death, I tried a different official server and suddenly there was so much food available it was like I was playing a different game. Something must have been up with that server because that doesn't make any sense. On this server every single orchard spawns fruit and I've seen multiple chickens already. It's a complete 180.

Official servers are all the same. That's why you can exploit a low pop server, go get super geared, then "server-hop" to a high-pop server to get your PvP action.

Just popping in to say how I dislike the way fruit spawns and especially stones. At the very least stones should spawn randomly so you could at least try to make a knife without relying on someone else having traveled through there or doubling back on your own tracks.

You don't have to 'double back", you can just sit in the same spot for about a minute .. doubling back is just more effective, as it allows you to collect 3 or more(stones) at one time, or to loot the surrounding houses while you wait for the (fruit)spawns to trigger.

Yeah it’s really not a big deal. I’m just in a seriously grumpy mood and for whatever reason felt the need to post. 😂
