Assault helmet vs. Tactical helmet
I can see that the tactical helmet attaches the NVG without the need of the NVG shroud, but does the assault helmet provide better coverage of protection?

Which should I go for? Suggestions?

Protection is the same.
Tactical only takes 4x3 inventory space.
Assault takes 4x4 inventory, is 100 grams lighter & provides slightly more insulation (1 vs 0.8, they're both quite insulated. An ushanka is 0.9).
doesn't the visor add some extra protection?
e.g. my combat gas mask once protected me from a wolf attack to the face...

no idea. that's what the game description says, but last time I checked there weren't separate hitboxes for your head and face. maybe the visor makes it more insulated. maybe it just changes how the item condition degrades. I have no idea. would need to test it out offline.

the gamepedia says the combat gas mask and.. well, essentially all headgear have the same blood/bleeding resistance modifier... zero. that may have changed though. again, no idea. gotta do the science thing... you'd think the item would need to be damaged before you get cut through it... so that's why i think maybe the visor just effects durability of the item (& why the gas mask protected you). if items have their own HP that would make sense. might be the only difference, if any..

gotta take the 3 helms and test their damage resistance, how fast they degrade, and how much duct tape/epoxy it takes to repair them... those are the only practical statistics I can think of. I guess there's insulation and whatnot.. hmm... wish I was more motivated to install the offline mod & look up how to work the console.. am quite curious.
hmm..dayz wiki says something else regarding the combat gas mask:

"The Gas Mask is currently one of the most resistant masks in DayZ due to it unique 30% resistance to bleeding (also see GP-5 Gas Mask), making it a attractive choice for those who often engage in Combat"

so apparently it has a modifier.
dunno about the damage resistance but the gas mask was badly damaged after the wolf attack.

if you are a rich player, with the chance to change between helmets, so ofc, assault helmet at night (with uni-flashlight or nvg) - and the other at day....
If you die and loose some gear, it is better to NOT loose the helmet with NVG attachment.
This is my opinion ofc. I play a little bit RP on the server I play on. This means that when I am not close to other players, I use other gear, that is not too heavy. A bigger packpack for looting, smaller weapon and less ammo, to lower weight, and a booniehat, or baseball cap, instead of a warm and clumpsy metal helmet....
:)
Maybe you guys think i am spast_c but RP is RP :)

you mean the tactical helmet at night (it has the lights attachements)

but otherwise you do right:
it always makes sense to adapt your gear to your needs.

Well some time ago i was drinking cola while crouching.
Some guy heard me doing this and he rushed on me.
I got shot from shotgun straight in my face from 1m...
Visor saved me..i think.
Picked up my pistol cos its much faster then gun from shoulder and fired all 15 rounds on him..
No bleeding, my health after was red..but survived..

I went with the tactical helmet- can't remember why. I think it was weight? AH yeah.

The tactical helmet connects the NVG directly to the helmet without the need of the NVG shroud with weighs less than 0.5kg (i think). The weight diff was pretty negligible but i think slightly in favor of the tactical helmet. But I say every gram counts right?

Since I didn't have the face shield for the big helmet, I went with the tac gear, and it freed up the face slot.
