Explosions are janky. I used to run over mines without taking damage sometimes. If feels like grenades and plastic explosives can get stuck inside floors and deal no damage.

Likelihood is that he was low on blood, or had a busted leg, or maybe even someone hit him with a suppressed shot from far away and was guardian-angeling our OP here.
Is also possible that he had low HP and straight up died instead of being KO'd, maybe due to hunger, bleeds, or temperature.
The player too whom attacked the survivor,
motive seems basically unclear other than the reason to stay alive,
they could have been dying of prion disease or was sick or poisoned themselves with cleaning products or by something else, most likely did not wash their hands.
The person trying to kill you most likely had pre-existing medical conditions that could have been from an infection or drinking clean water before washing their hands when handling an item or eating fresh cooked meat before washing their hands after placing it on a stick and not wearing gloves at appropriate moments when butchering meat.
once getting sick, dehydration will sink in and your the requirement for food and water will be about 10 times higher if your really sick, blood loss and the infections take over, even common cold left untreated will make anyone more acceptable to catch another disease that will have their effects strengthen due to being in a vulnerable condition prior to getting infected.
I am sure they were not mentally coherent to work with other people to stay alive with out violence, the laws of nature with-in the game saved you or just a weird bug.
