Seriously, you only puke if you are sick with food poisoning.
Just nibble a couple of bites every few min and small sips.
otherwise, you eat and drink until you are full.
If food/water is scarce, eat to the level when the icons become filled, but not more beyond that: the more you're full, the faster the calories will burn away, so stuffing yourself is wasteful. Keeping it a few minutes of action above yellow is the most efficient.
When sick, a good rule of thumb is to stop after 5 seconds of eating and wait a minute or two.
the 'fuller' you get, the less you'll see the bar raising.
keep in mind that a completely filled icon doesn't mean you're maxed out...you're just full and can still stuff yourself (which you should do at every possible opportunity, never carry food with you, your body is the best container).
when sick, only eat and drink very small amounts at a time, but you'll have to do it very frequently to compensate the less calories (like sipping a coke in three gulps with a delay of a minute or so between each).

As you see, from white to FULL white takes way longer. And as you see, after the icon is already full, you can still eat drink more.
For the bottle example. If you reach a full white bottle, you have 2400 water. BUT you can still drink 2600 more. So u are basically just 48% filled with water (with a full icon). Same for health and energy.
Stuffed: eat and drink as much as u want untill u get the stomach symbol.
When sick: eat and drink like 1/8 from the food/water you have. An that every, lets say, 30 seconds. So u can get a full apple or bottle when u sick.
If you have at least a full Health, Blood, Apple and Bottle symbol. (Just a full symbol, not completely full like the Stat - Sheet shows you), u basically cant get sick.
small fruits and vegies dont give you much but its something. sealed food give you more.
dont eat Mystery canned goods or Unknown food (says it in the description when you click on it. IT WILL MAKE YOU SICK
ride out the sickness, take vitamins or try medicines.
running or heavy labor drains your system faster.
