I'm not a huge fan of MP games and have managed to play most of my hours in DAYZ solo and PvE.
BUT...
the game is designed around, at the very least, playing with friends and especially playing with random so whilst it can be pure solo it's not aimed at that player and also whilst many do PvE (and have oodles of fun) it's not created directly for that style.
tldr? yes. with some caveats.
Choose a low pop server, avoid shooting without a silencer, pay attention to you're surroundings, flee instead of fighting, etc.
Learn the survival aspects of the game, looking for food, Hunting, Fishing, Building a base understanding how the game flows. Then maybe when you've mastered that, PvP a few times.
The game IS worth it so long as you aren't afraid of dying to both player and environment. Also there's many Modded servers that have awesome community's.
Every death leads to a life that adapts and overcomes.
For people who just want to grab a glass of whiskey and just chill alone or with friends, building your base, small towns. killing some zeds and more, for sure it is worth it if you're into it.
Does this mean you can effectively play it as a single player game? If so, are there quests and so on, or just open sandbox and building?
Yet there are no missions (can be modded), goals, achievements, or rewards....Yet if you have a good imagination, enjoyr creating your own stories, don't require other player interactions (except maybe friends), and just want to play in the world...well then yeah you can enjoy yourself.
On the server I play on we have custom made quests and a story line, if you're interested mate.
More or less, if you're completely dependent on community mods to achieve the gameplay experience you're looking for, you might be better off looking for a game that was professionally designed for PvE if that's what you're looking for. Because there's really no good reason why you should play DayZ if you're looking for a good zombie coop game when you could be playing something like Dying Light.
I'd be very weary of the people trying to sell you on the idea that DayZ is fantastic and competitive at offering a variety of gameplay experiences. I don't know what their intentions are by misrepresenting the game but you don't have to browse this forum for long to see that there are a lot of people unsatisfied with many aspects of the game. This game has sold millions of copies over a decade, yet only 30,000 people on average bother to play it. Most people play it for awhile, get pissed off, and then move on.
Basically you run the same thing on your PC that the server would run at the same time as your game.
you can add mods as well.
there's a bit of code fiddling but nothing extravagant.
there's guides out there on "how to" (im not the best person to give tech support) and running both server and game on my PC didn't seem to slow stuff down that I could see. Obviously if you have a potato PC this might be harder to do.
