Problem with community servers, server descriptions, and loot spawning
I have read several posts on here, as well as other forums about the frequency loot spawns on location.

Some people claim you can loot a structure, travel 150+ meters away, and immediately return to the structure and loot will respawn. The idea being, loot renders on sight once you are a certain distance away. - This is completely bunk. I have tried this several times using a range finder to make sure I am at least 200m away, and I have stripped buildings down to bare empty, and nothing returns.

Some people claim the loot respawns after a certain amount of time, like say an hour or so. - This I also find to be completely bunk, as I have tested this on empty servers. For instance, I have completely looted a building barracks (on an empty server), and return to this zone after a few hours, and often times there is still nothing in there.

The servers I have tested this on have been unmodded-vanilla servers, although they were community servers. There is nothing ever in the server description that details what in the world people are doing to their servers. They tell you nothing. Often times I have to play on a server for an hour or so before I even know whether or not this is a server I want to play on, based on how much the server owner/s have tweaked everything. I have played on servers where 99% of the loot spawns in either pristine or worn, but there was nothing in the server description to warn me of this.

So what is going on with the loot spawning? Is the reason I find loot spawning to be so inconsistent a matter of playing in community servers that tweak the loot spawning, but fail to mention it in the description?

And also, how in gods name am I supposed to know what people are doing to their servers if they are not mentioning it in the mods description?

I can filter my server search to "unmodded/vanilla" and still end up in community servers that are massively tweaked, but I have to play there for an hour to see what they've done to the server. How do I avoid this?

loot only respawns once an item reached its minimum value on the map.
lets say theres a max amount of 16 pink radar caps and a minimum of 8; those radar caps will only start respawning back to max once the minimum amount of that specific item was reached.
u cant take out all the patrol jackets, berets and handguards out of this military base and expect an m16 to spawn back in instead. its better to just move on to the next location.

but yea, some servers can give u a quick impression and on others it will take more time to figure it out.
i have a simple three-liner on my server with some warnings for new players, the rest they have to figure out for themself.
most popular community servers use discord to get more details.

etwas has it right, gotta read their Discord and ask questions in Discord. Kinda have to do that for many things like stamina, as even "no mods" doesn't mean they have completely changed the stamina/damage/building/food/etc. Most "no mods" are actually pretty modded internally, they just don't run Workshop mods.

However, most admins aren't graceful about their items.xml edits and don't really understand the loot economy system. I'd guess that 90% of the Community servers have broken loot somewhere, just don't care, or even know. They generally will get defensive about asking about loot edits, and you'll get "play the server to find out" answers as they don't actually know as they don't play their servers as players anyhow, and just admin spawn everything for themselves.

It's kinda funny how a few people swear loot-cycling still works when it so obviously does not.

People need to bombard those old youtube videos with comments about how it does not work anymore.

True. When it was a thing, heck .58? It got fixed pretty quickly.

I think the CSGO/CoD/participation-trophy folks coming from console is the reason. It's like some weird kind of desperation to just win...not die, have endless loot, etc.

I'm beginning to think after reading allot of posts here, youtube, and old timers like myself and many of you fine gentlemen here that the Console port is really to blame for allot of whats weird about DayZ both from Community and dev standpoints.

Although I can't really afford it, I am really tempted to start hosting again. Something totally vanilla...I think the only edit to make is vehicle persistence, otherwise leave all loot tables and settings as-is vanilla.

An actual, 100%, NO MODS, True Vanilla server is VERY hard to come by these days as they all run "some" kind of mod.. I get people wanting the "quality of life" mods but they can even be to much. Lots of people want what you want to host.

All the power to you if you start running a TRUE vanilla server, because it will most likely fill up pretty fast. :stein:

I was going to shut down my server because not many people use it... Let me know how ya'll think I should set it up and I'll keep it running. I can do 100% modless, but there are a few little QoL mods that make the game so much better.

Let me know :)

Just an FYI, I love the idea of a PVE server with PVP zones...

Loot cycling does work you have to take everything from a location run 300m away and burn the loot in a fire then relog and go back and stuff will spawn again

It works on official servers and community servers but be aware
Most community servers have rules against loot cycling so you can get banned

but if you burn the loot you avoid getting in trouble as the evidence is gone and it works every time

PVE/PVP servers are fine with me! PVEZ Mod works great for such setups. What QOL mods do you like? I would be down for a monthly donation on any server that ran mim. mods with good PVE settings for survival.

a few QoL mods I like do things like resize a few items. Like the leather repair kit. Why on Earth does it take up 6 inventory slots? Many mods shrink it down to 2 or 3 slots.

Another one I like is called pristine repair. This one is really 'nonvanilla', though... But I still love it. Basically when you repair an item, it takes it from any level all the way to pristine, and only takes away one use of the repair item. But if you think about it in real life; do you really take a sewing kit to a damaged shirt, and use it two or 3 times before the shirt is undamaged? No, you use the kit once and the shirt is good as new.

Obviously codelock is needed. Standard combo locks can be brute forced in 20 minutes for the 3 number and a few hours for the 4 number.

Earplugs is a no-brainer. Cars are WAY too loud to drive in 3rd person without that mod.

I'm not a big fan of autorun.

I could go on for hours...

I wiped my server and am formulating a plan...
Lufty Sep 12, 2023 @ 2:08pm
Those are all good QOL mods. Codelock, Earplugs yep! Resize could make allot of sense for some items, as long as things like barrels and whatnot can't be put in your pockets.
Never ran a repair mod, not sure about it, but I guess it would theoretically keep hording down as as long as you got repair kits for items, you don't need 20 of anything.

One I always liked was Junkyard dog for vehicle part savaging, makes all those wrecks actually useful.

More Doors or Even More Doors is nice for not having to make fences/gates that clip thru walls. Makes for cleaner bases when built in existing structures. No need for BBP with that mod. Then again on raid servers I just don't build as it's pointless.
Idaho Sep 12, 2023 @ 2:14pm
I'll look into more doors. I can't remember exactly what that's all about.

It's basically a door that you can build in place of the vanilla gate so it actually fits in a door jam. I like it as I never could stand the clipping from those vanilla gates.
I like it better then BBP as with BBP you gotta police builds as folks generally build mental sky bases or 6x6x6 monstrosities that lag the F out of the server when filled with crap.

I recently played on 2 community servers, & on those 2 I had experimented an heavy & constant loot-cycling.

What I did not experimented on others commu servers & neither on official ones.

So, claiming that it doesnt work is really funny to read.

It will depend on how the loot is managed.

By my own personnal experience on those 2 commu servers, you should avoid such radical opinion.

If you set your items.xml to count in inventory, you can loot cycle all day long and the max number of M4s/AKs/9v/etc. will be reached and stuff will NEVER spawn.
Of course this only works on servers that have raiding enabled.
