Starting a lightly modded server
Hey I'm looking to start up a new lightly modded server, none of the OP armour or weapons but not just the default ones either, couple custom clothes and base building. I've got a list of mods that I would like to use and have some knowledge on how to add them and set them up I'm going to do more research before I fork out money on a server and advertising it

But was just looking for a few honest opinions on how hard it would be to set up or maintain and get people playing on it or even if it would be worth it. I'm not looking to gain anything from this besides making a cool little community of like minded gamers. Would appreciate any input, suggestions and mod ideas

Hi,

I am basically doing the same. It is slow going building a community, but having the server become stable with the mods I selected was a long process (for me). I have a discord channel and a server with 8 slots. I would be willing to expand it to 10-20 slots if there was demand.

If you are interested in playing there, you are welcome to:

38th Parallel - - you can find it out there on the list. Discord - https://discord.gg/Hhs79qwE

Anyway, hope to see you out there somewhere....

There's no sense having a server under 40 players as anything lower just makes people think it's a hobby server and won't be up very long.
I won't even try a server that has traders.
Numbers attract numbers.
If someone does join don't feed them loot or help them by restitution, if things bug out and they lose loot.
Good Luck

Even 40 pop servers get ignored. Go 60min. unless it's Namalsk, then 30 is OK.

I wont join unless it's over 80 people, the maps are way too big for any meaningful interations

I would recommend going with a good hosting company, preferably a dedicated bare metal server that you have direct OS access to, but that's up to how you want to handle files/updates/mods/etc. OVH has good deals from time to time.

I would avoid "home" hosting unless you have a fat dedicated line just for the server, and good hardware, running Windows Server OS. Plan on having your server running 24/7.

Many players choose this option. Hi-pop only is pretty common.

Retaining players on a new server is very difficult. Not to discourage you, but many players are looking for population, active admins, and pretty specific mods/setups these days. Having something original, and not a cookie cutter of what every other hi-pop server has will be important.

For example, like EVERY US based server these days runs Unlimited Stamina, and easy-mode. There has been some interest in a survival type server in the US that isn't loaded down with traders, unlimited/boosted stamina, etc. Might be a good options.

Might be hard to find modded armor/weapon mods that are not OP when comnpared to vanilla weapons/armor. I would recommend not running any tier V or III armor kits (MMG), as that will only make PVP players run 338 or 408/.50cal as defaults, as even 308 aint much against V/III armor sets.

Good example of what I was mentioning above. Too many modded servers in the US right now. Pure vanilla is the way to go I think if yer planning on hosting in the US, and looking for a stable/fun pop.

even in europe there's only really one vanilla server with a population i can play on. there are spaggie's servers but i can't play on those because of two almost 10 year old bans in call of duty, so i'm all ears for any hardcore servers on this side of the atlantic.

I used to run an almost completely vanilla server (it started with zero mods, then just stayed at 2-3 mods for quite some time).

But then people start getting bored and asking in discord, 'why dont we get this mod. why dont we get that mod'...

Eventually our population was pegged at 15-20 people almost nonstop, but the mod count crept up to like 15 mods...

Then I had to shut it all down because of personal issues.

Now I have a new server with tons of fun mods, but nothing retarded like traders or helicopters or unlimited stamina.

Thank you for reading my blog.

not every mod is bad. just look at the amazing map mods. namalsk and deerisle alone are worth the money for dayz imho.
theres mods that can improve the gameplay, like for example better infected behaviour (bang open doors, throwing stuff at you, damaging your vehicle etc.).
or just have a mod with different cosmetics for clothing. it doesnt hurt the game experience if theres 8 variants of the hunting jacket instead of 3 (or whatever item). theres also some really individual modded clothing in various mods (im not talking about the 500 slot backpacks in other mods^^).
even a helicopter mod cant be bad if its set up right by the admin.
and all this "fun" mods (like various types of vehicles, or small crafting receipes), if balanced right - it will hardly effect the "vanilla feeling".
so if theres a server with dozens of mods, but no indicator of traders, mapmarkers, unlimited stamina or other nonsense (no offense to whose who enjoy this kind of servers, but thats where its a different game for me) and its populated, it might be worth to check it out.

the dayone servers are very popular lightly modded in the us. maybe too poplar, but im sure theres similar servers.

I dunno man, every server I have looked at nearly always has unlimited stamina and traders. Even "vanilla" ones just have it scripted into the server-side. If anyone knows of a US server that does NOT have unlimited stamina and traders let me know!

bro, my server has 'almost' normal stamina and no traders... It's in... Western US somewhere, I forgot which state, maybe Arizona.

I made the characters a little stronger. I hate how on official servers, once you get reasonably geared up, you can barely jump up on objects... So my stamina is boosted like 20%.

Thanks man, yeah I'm a PVP player. Your server looks awesome though for PVE. No need for regular stamina as there is no advantage with no PVP. Thanks though!

Mods can be good, but server owners are rarely capable of moderation. Aside from that, I personally have pretty high standards for the quality of mods, so even if they're not disruptive in their intention they often are disruptive because they are of far worse quality and polish than the content made by BI. Not always the case, but quantity over quality seems to be the way most mods are made.
