In-game voice is just bad…..
My friend and I use Discord and after some troubleshooting he finally got his in-game voice to work. We left discord to test it out and quickly realized that the VOIP quality is just…..terrible. I’m guessing this is normal with this game? We ran across a group of 4 other dudes and their voice in-game was awful too.

Is there possibly any mods or some sort of standalone program to run that would correct this? The quality is like 1/4 of what Discord is. It’s pretty ick, sadly. Could it have anything to do with playing a modded map? (Valning)

There is a VOIP Quality setting, but I don't recall if it is Server side, or Client side .. check the settings in Launcher and in-game.

Hmm I’ll dig around a bit but I have a feeling it’s server side. Nothing under the normal audio settings aside from PTT and input/output levels.

it is server set, but high quality means more bandwidth!

What do you mean by quality?
In game VOIP has a lot of game specific factors that affects it's output and quality that has nothing to do with the actual VOIP quality.

Examples:
Distance greatly affects VOIP volume and falls off at a relatively short distance.
Helmets make VOIP sound muffled for the speaker.
Gas masks also impact VOIP volume and also sound muffled.

Yeah I rarely use in game VOIP with the exception of encountering people outside your group, then you really have no choice.

EDIT:
IIRC, sebi1106 below jogged my memory, there is a server side setting that controls VOIP quality, the servers you were one were probably set to low. I am too lazy to go and verify settings on our server but VOIP sounds fine for us.

EDIT again:
Server config (typically server.cfg)
Main Parameters
vonCodecQuality = 20; // Voice over network codec quality, the higher the better (values 0-30)

The ingame voice is... okay..... not good.... not bad.... its okay.
It all depends on the server your playing on.
When everyone sounded awful, the server probably had poor VoIP quality.

Ok so it’s probably the server settings (I’m not hosting). Sounds like a 96kbps rip on Winamp in 1998.

To be fair in the thousands of hours of playing I don't think I need dolby surround to listen to people scream NOOB and 1337 and GIT GUD and then cuss you when you kill them in any higher quality. :)

This is true. However I’m currently playing in a PVE server with trader, so there’s quite a lot of run-ins with randos and it would be nice if their voices didn’t sound so poor. Oh well, no biggie and I will just work with what I’m dealt!

did you know there is 3 different ranges of voice chat? I'm sure you do but just in case you didn't , you can yell, talk normal, and whisper :P

You forgot one important fact...
That requires THOUGHT...
Or, more common... A device that TELLS them to do it.

it works fine for most people, its got to be a setting issue for you guys or bad sound card and mic issue etc

@mentalpatient yeah I knew that, but thanks for throwing it out there!

@baddoggs 😐

Apologies that I’m pretty new and was just curious about this.

Huh I never monkeyed with that setting. Might need to try 30 and see if it's any better! Thanks!
